Bucknell Rallies Past American in Patriot League Women’s Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — A dominant fourth-quarter surge propelled the Bucknell Bison to a 58-45 victory over the American Eagles in a Patriot League women’s basketball contest Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion.
The game, witnessed by 255 fans, was a defensive struggle for three quarters before the Bison erupted for 22 points in the final period to pull away. The win improved Bucknell to 7-14 overall, while American fell to 6-16.
The decisive stretch began with the Bison clinging to a 36-32 lead entering the fourth quarter. American’s offense, stagnant for much of the night, managed to stay within four points after a pair of Charlotte Tuhy free throws cut the deficit to 47-45 with just under five minutes remaining. From that point, Bucknell slammed the door with an 11-0 run over the next three and a half minutes, a burst that sealed the outcome.
The catalyst for the Bison was sophomore guard Tuana Coskun of Istanbul, Turkey. Coskun scored a game-high 21 points, with nine of those coming in the critical fourth quarter. Her driving layup at the 7:01 mark ignited the game-clinching run, and she later assisted on a Reese Zemitis three-pointer that pushed the lead to nine. Coskun added three assists in 37 minutes of action.
Bucknell’s defense was the foundation of the victory. The Bison held American to 29.6% shooting from the field, including just 5 of 23 from three-point range. The Eagles’ offensive rating of 66.0 on 68 possessions underscored their scoring difficulties. American also committed 17 turnovers, which Bucknell converted into 18 points.
Conversely, the Bison were more efficient, shooting 42.9% from the floor and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line. They also owned a decisive 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.
American was led by guard Madisyn Moore-Nicholson of Odenton, Maryland, who scored 15 points. Molly Driscoll of Allentown, Pennsylvania, added 10 points and four assists. Tuhy, a forward from Madison, New Jersey, contributed nine points, four blocks, and four steals in a strong all-around defensive effort.
For Bucknell, support for Coskun came from multiple sources. Zemitis, a guard from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, scored 12 points and dished out two assists. Forward Mariah Hardy of Baltimore, Maryland, provided nine points off the bench, and forward Desirae Ashton of Fredericksburg, Virginia, chipped in eight points and two blocks.
The game’s most important sequence was Bucknell’s fourth-quarter response after American had drawn close. Following Tuhy’s free throws to make it 47-45, the Eagles missed their next four field goal attempts and committed two turnovers. Bucknell capitalized with a Zemitis three-pointer, a Coskun layup, a Zemitis free throw, and another Coskun layup to extend the lead to 55-45 with 2:09 left, effectively ending the competitive phase of the game.
The first half was a low-scoring affair defined by defense. Bucknell led 13-9 after a first quarter where both teams combined to shoot 9 of 32. American found a brief rhythm in the second quarter, using a 7-0 run to take a 20-18 lead after a Madisyn Moore-Nicholson three-pointer. The Bison closed the half with four straight points, however, to reclaim a 22-20 advantage at intermission.
The third quarter saw the teams trade small runs. American briefly tied the game at 26-26 on another Moore-Nicholson three, but Bucknell answered with a 7-2 spurt to rebuild a five-point cushion. The Eagles stayed within striking distance, trailing by just four heading to the final quarter, setting the stage for Bucknell’s closing kick.
The victory gave Bucknell a season split with American after the Eagles won the first meeting. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 18.
American looks to rebound on Saturday when it hosts Navy. Bucknell continues its conference schedule on the road Saturday at Colgate.
