Marquette Holds Off Georgetown Rally for Big East Road Win

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Lee Volker scored 22 points and Marquette used a dominant defensive start to build a lead it would never relinquish, defeating Georgetown 67-59 in a Big East women’s basketball game Sunday at Capital One Arena.

The Golden Eagles (15-7, 6-5 Big East) held the Hoyas to just eight first-quarter points, forcing eight turnovers and blocking three shots to establish a 16-8 advantage. That early cushion proved critical as Georgetown (12-10, 5-6) mounted several challenges but could never draw even.

The most important sequence of the game came late in the third quarter with Marquette’s lead trimmed to 34-31. The Golden Eagles responded with a decisive 9-0 run, sparked by their defense. Jaidynn Mason converted a driving layup and the ensuing free throw after a foul. On the ensuing Georgetown possession, Skylar Forbes blocked Brianna Scott’s layup attempt, leading to a transition opportunity that Lee Volker finished with a layup. After another Georgetown miss, Bridget Utberg buried a 3-pointer from the wing, assisted by Halle Vice, pushing the Marquette lead to 43-31 with 2:34 left in the period. The Hoyas would not get within single digits again until the final 30 seconds.

Volker, a 6-foot-1 guard from Purcellville, Virginia, led all scorers, hitting three 3-pointers and going 7 for 8 from the free-throw line. Her backcourt partner, Vice, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists. Mason added 10 points and six rebounds, while Forbes contributed 11 points and four blocks for Marquette.

Georgetown was led by Khadee Hession, who scored 20 points. Destiny Agubata added 11 points and five rebounds, and Summer Davis chipped in 10 points off the bench. The Hoyas struggled offensively, shooting just 37.7% from the field and 30% from 3-point range. They also committed 16 turnovers, which Marquette converted into 15 points.

Despite the loss, Georgetown won the turnover battle, forcing 23 Marquette mistakes and scoring 19 points off them. The Hoyas also had 11 steals to Marquette’s seven. But Marquette’s interior defense and efficiency won the day. The Golden Eagles shot 54.3% from the field, outscored Georgetown 32-20 in the paint, and blocked five shots.

After its early struggles, Georgetown found a rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring Marquette 19-15 behind eight points from Davis to cut the deficit to 31-27 at halftime. The Hoyas hung around through the third quarter before Marquette’s pivotal run created the separation needed to secure the road victory.

The win avenges a 63-54 home loss to Georgetown on Jan. 17 and extends Marquette’s winning streak to three games. The Golden Eagles have won five of their last six. Georgetown has now dropped two straight.

Marquette finished the game with an offensive rating of 99.8 points per 100 possessions, while Georgetown managed just 84.8. The Golden Eagles’ ability to generate quality shots, making 25 of 46 attempts, ultimately outweighed their turnover issues.

Marquette next hosts Providence on Wednesday. Georgetown travels to face Creighton, also on Wednesday.
