Elon Pulls Away Early, Holds Off Towson in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Elon Phoenix used a dominant first quarter to establish control and never looked back, defeating the Towson Tigers 68-54 in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Sunday at Schar Center.

Elon, improving to 10-11 overall, set the tone from the opening tip, racing to a 20-6 lead after the first period. The Phoenix defense stifled Towson, forcing early shot clock violations and turnovers that fueled their transition game. LaNae’ Corbett won the opening jump ball and scored the game’s first basket on a Maraja Pass assist just nine seconds in, igniting a 9-0 run that forced a Towson timeout less than 90 seconds into the contest.

The Phoenix lead ballooned to 16-2 midway through the quarter, powered by Laila Anderson’s early 3-pointer and efficient interior scoring. Towson, which fell to 12-9, struggled to find any offensive rhythm, shooting poorly and committing seven turnovers in the opening frame. The Tigers did not reach double figures until the 2:46 mark of the second quarter.

Elon’s backcourt duo of Tyana Walker and Laila Anderson provided consistent scoring throughout. Walker, a 5-foot-10 guard from Leawood, Kansas, finished with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds. Anderson, a 5-7 guard from Burlington, North Carolina, added 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, orchestrating the offense and applying constant pressure.

Towson attempted to mount a comeback after halftime, outscoring Elon 16-19 in the third quarter and 20-14 in the fourth as their shooting improved. A driving layup by India Johnston and a free throw from Thalia Shepard late in the third cut the deficit to 54-52, marking the closest the Tigers had been since the opening minutes.

The pivotal sequence came early in the fourth quarter with Elon leading 57-54. Following a Towson turnover, Elon’s Ruby Willard found a curling Tyana Walker for a critical 3-pointer from the wing, pushing the lead back to six with 8:29 to play. On the ensuing possession, Towson’s Zoli Khalil was fouled on a 3-point attempt but could only make one of three free throws, missing a chance to answer. Elon’s defense then locked down, holding Towson scoreless for over four minutes while extending the lead to 64-54 on a Quinzia Fulmore tip-in with 3:54 remaining, effectively sealing the game.

Elon’s interior presence was key, with Fulmore, a 6-3 forward from Greensboro, North Carolina, posting eight points, 10 rebounds and a block. Corbett added 13 points and two blocks. The Phoenix scored 18 points off 15 Towson turnovers and shared the ball effectively, with Pass dishing out seven assists.

For Towson, Shepard led the way with nine points and six rebounds, while Semaya Turner contributed eight points and seven boards. Shariah Baynes provided a spark off the bench with six points, two assists and three steals. The Tigers finished with 30 points in the paint, matching Elon’s total, but were undone by their slow start and 34.5% shooting from the field.

The most important part of the game was Elon’s immediate and overwhelming first-quarter surge, which established a 14-point lead that created a cushion Towson spent the entire game trying to erase. The Tigers’ late third-quarter push to within two points was decisively halted by Walker’s clutch fourth-quarter 3-pointer, which restored Elon’s multi-possession lead and momentum for good.

Attendance was 287 at the 5,100-seat Schar Center.

Elon next travels to face North Carolina A&T on Friday. Towson returns home to host William & Mary on Friday.
