Meabon’s Double-Double Lifts Colgate Women Past Lehigh in Patriot League Thriller
HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Ella Meabon scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Madison Schiller converted a crucial layup with 8 seconds remaining to lift the Colgate Raiders to a 68-66 victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a Patriot League women’s basketball game Saturday at Cotterell Court.
The game, witnessed by 254 fans, was a tense, back-and-forth affair decided in the final seconds after Lehigh had erased a 10-point second-half deficit. Colgate improved to 6-14 overall, while Lehigh fell to an even 10-10.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final half-minute with the score tied at 66. After Lehigh’s Whitney Lind missed a layup with 34 seconds left, Colgate called a timeout to set up a final play. Out of the break, Lehigh’s Gracyn Lovette committed a turnover, which was stolen by Meabon. The Raiders quickly pushed the ball upcourt, and Meabon found a cutting Schiller for the go-ahead layup with just 8 ticks on the clock.
Lehigh, without a timeout, rushed upcourt, but Lovette committed another turnover as time expired, sealing the Raiders’ narrow win.
The contest was a stark contrast to the teams’ meeting just three weeks prior, when Lehigh dominated in a 64-45 win. This time, Colgate weathered an early offensive showcase from Lehigh’s Lily Fandre. The 6-foot-1 sophomore from Eagan, Minnesota, scored 23 points, including 11 in the first quarter, to help the Mountain Hawks take a 17-14 lead after one period.
Colgate responded in the second quarter behind the play of Tatiana Matthews, who came off the bench to score 10 of her 16 points before halftime. The Raiders took a 29-30 lead into the locker room after a low-scoring first half.
The third quarter saw Colgate seize control with a 24-point outburst. Meabon, a 5-foot-8 guard from Fairport, New York, was instrumental during the stretch, scoring 9 points as the Raiders built a 53-44 advantage heading into the final period.
Lehigh refused to fade, mounting a determined comeback in the fourth. Belle Bramer, who finished with 15 points, and Fandre led the charge. A Bramer layup with 1:18 to play tied the game at 66, setting the stage for the frantic finish.
Statistically, the game was a study in contrasting efficiencies. Lehigh shot a sharp 49% from the field but was undone by 19 turnovers, which Colgate converted into 20 points. The Raiders, conversely, shot just 41.8% but committed only 10 turnovers and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds to Lehigh’s 7.
Schiller complemented Meabon’s double-double with a stat line of 14 points and 8 assists in 39 minutes for Colgate. For Lehigh, Whitney Lind just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Bramer added 5 rebounds and 2 steals to her 15 points.
The loss snapped a brief two-game winning streak for Lehigh in conference play, while Colgate earned its second Patriot League victory of the season and avenged its earlier loss to the Mountain Hawks. Both teams return to action Wednesday, with Lehigh hosting Loyola Maryland and Colgate traveling to face Army.
