Green Bay Women Cruise Past Wright State in Horizon League Matchup

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (Interstat) — The Green Bay Phoenix used a dominant first half and a game-high 20 points from Jenna Guyer to cruise past the Wright State Raiders 66-52 in a Horizon League women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Resch Center.

The Phoenix, improving to 18-5 overall and solidifying their position atop the conference, never trailed. They built a 33-15 lead by halftime, capitalizing on a frigid offensive start by the visiting Raiders. Wright State managed just seven points in the opening quarter and eight in the second, shooting a combined 7-for-30 from the floor in the first half.

Green Bay’s control was established early. After Wright State’s Rylee Sagester opened the scoring with a three-pointer, the Phoenix responded with a 15-2 run over the remainder of the first quarter. The run was fueled by interior play and defensive pressure, with Carley Duffney and Meghan Schultz converting offensive rebounds and Maddy Skorupski contributing a steal. The Raiders committed six turnovers in the period, stifling any chance to build rhythm.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Green Bay extending its lead. Guyer, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Circle Pines, Minnesota, began to find her scoring touch, hitting a three-pointer and a jump shot as part of her 10 first-half points. The Phoenix defense continued to smother Wright State, holding them to 23.3% shooting for the half while forcing nine turnovers.

The most important stretch of the game came late in the third quarter, when Wright State showed its only significant sign of life. Trailing 46-30, the Raiders mounted a 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Ellie Magestro-Kennedy with 4:08 left in the period, to cut the deficit to 48-39. The surge injected energy into the Raiders and threatened to make the final quarter competitive.

Green Bay, however, immediately snuffed out the rally. On the ensuing possession, Kristina Ouimette answered with a critical three-pointer off an assist from Kamy Peppler. After a Wright State miss, Jenna Guyer hit a jump shot to push the lead back to 53-39. The Phoenix closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to re-establish a commanding 53-40 advantage, effectively ending the Raiders’ hopes of a comeback.

Wright State, which fell to 6-16, continued to fight in the fourth quarter, outscoring Green Bay 22-13 behind 12 points from Grace Okih, but could never draw closer than 11 points. The Raiders’ improved second-half shooting, particularly a 22-point fourth quarter, was not enough to overcome the deep early hole.

Guyer’s 20 points led all scorers, and she added six defensive rebounds. She was supported by a balanced Phoenix attack. Meghan Schultz, a 6-4 freshman from Waukesha, Wisconsin, provided a strong interior presence with 12 points. Maddy Skorupski filled the stat sheet with 10 points, four assists and a game-high seven defensive rebounds, while Kamy Peppler directed the offense with eight assists.

For Wright State, Grace Okih, a 6-2 sophomore from Lagos, Nigeria, led the way with 12 points in 20 minutes off the bench. MaKenzie Drout, a hometown player from Kimberly, Wisconsin, scored nine points, all in the second half, and Rylee Sagester also added nine.

The Phoenix finished the game shooting 41.7% from the field and outrebounded the Raiders 45-34. Wright State shot 30.9% for the game. The announced attendance was 2,260.

The victory extends Green Bay’s winning streak to four games. They next travel to face Robert Morris on Thursday, Feb. 5. Wright State, which has lost four of its last five, looks to rebound quickly on the road at Milwaukee on Saturday.
