Jacksonville Women Cruise Past Lipscomb in ASUN Matchup
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Jacksonville Dolphins used a relentless defensive effort to force 27 turnovers and complete a season sweep of the Lipscomb Bisons with a 72-54 victory in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Allen Arena.
Jacksonville, which also defeated Lipscomb 72-59 on Jan. 3, improved to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Lipscomb fell to 7-13 and 2-4.
The game’s defining characteristic was Jacksonville’s suffocating pressure, which generated 16 steals and consistently disrupted the Lipscomb offense. The Bisons’ 27 turnovers led directly to numerous transition opportunities for the Dolphins and were the primary factor in their offensive struggles, as they managed only 54 points on 75 possessions, an offensive rating of 72.4.
Aniah Smith, a 5-foot-4 guard from Avon, Indiana, spearheaded the Dolphins’ attack with a game-high 15 points, four assists and three steals in 32 minutes. Priscilla Williams, a 6-2 guard from Houston, Texas, added 20 points, three assists and two blocks. Tatum Brown contributed 15 points and Makiya Miller of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, scored 13.
For Lipscomb, McKayla Miller of Cimarron, Kansas, scored 15 points, while Molly Heard of Pisgah, Alabama, added 13 points, two assists and a block. Hannah Richardson of Auckland, New Zealand, finished with 10 points.
The most important stretch of the game occurred in the second quarter, when Jacksonville’s defense catalyzed a decisive run. Leading 21-18 with just over six minutes left in the half, the Dolphins unleashed a series of defensive plays that broke the game open. Comari Mitchell and Aniah Smith recorded consecutive steals, with Smith converting the latter into a layup. Moments later, Smith stole the ball again from Lipscomb’s McKayla Miller and scored another fast-break layup, pushing the lead to 27-21.
The sequence exemplified Jacksonville’s dominance, as they turned Lipscomb’s miscues into immediate points. The Bisons never recovered from that surge, as the Dolphins built a 39-30 halftime lead and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. Jacksonville led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.
Despite shooting just 31.1% from the field (23 of 74), Jacksonville’s ability to create extra possessions proved decisive. The Dolphins attempted seven more field goals and 23 more free throws than Lipscomb, making 20 of 23 from the line. They also held a 13-8 edge in offensive rebounds.
Lipscomb shot slightly better at 31.9% (15 of 47) and was efficient from the free-throw line, making 17 of 18, but was undone by its inability to handle Jacksonville’s defensive pressure. The Bisons managed only six assists against their 27 turnovers.
The win marked a bounce-back performance for Jacksonville following a 63-82 loss at Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 22. Lipscomb, which had won two of its last three, including a road victory at Florida Gulf Coast, saw its momentum halted.
Jacksonville next plays at Austin Peay on Saturday. Lipscomb will host North Florida on Saturday.
The announced attendance at Allen Arena was 449.
