Bellarmine at Queens (N.C.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Queens Royals will seek a regular-season sweep when they host the Bellarmine Knights in an ASUN Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at Levine Center.

The Royals (7-12 overall) defeated the Knights 58-46 in Louisville, Kentucky, on Jan. 1. Ana Barreto led Queens with 19 points in that victory. Barreto is coming off a 21-point performance in a 77-64 loss at West Georgia on Jan. 24.

Bellarmine (2-19) enters on a nine-game losing streak, most recently a 73-49 home loss to Jacksonville on Jan. 24. Guard Andrea Chiquemba scored 15 points with seven rebounds in that contest, continuing her role as a focal point of the Knights’ offense.

Both teams have struggled in conference play. The Knights are searching for their first ASUN win, while the Royals have lost seven straight since their victory over Bellarmine to open the league slate.

Chiquemba has been Bellarmine’s most consistent scorer during the skid, averaging 8.1 points per game in conference action. For Queens, Barreto averages a team-high 11.4 points in ASUN games, though she was held to five points in a narrow 63-60 loss at North Alabama on Jan. 22.

Defense will likely be pivotal. In the first meeting, Queens held Bellarmine to 27.3% shooting from the field. The Knights have failed to reach 60 points in eight of their nine conference losses this season.

The game is the only scheduled meeting between the programs in Charlotte this season. Queens will continue a three-game homestand against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Bellarmine travels to face West Georgia on Jan. 31.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
