McNeese State Outlasts Stephen F. Austin in Overtime Road Victory

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless pressure and missed opportunities, the McNeese State Cowgirls authored a gritty road victory, overcoming a significant second-half deficit to stun the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 70-64 in overtime on Thursday night at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

Defying a national statistical projection that gave them less than a 14 percent chance to win, McNeese State (17-4) leaned on a dominant rebounding performance and a stifling defense to hand Stephen F. Austin (14-7) a costly home loss in a key Southland Conference matchup. The Cowgirls won despite shooting a frigid 29.1 percent from the field, a testament to their ability to create extra possessions and capitalize on Ladyjack mistakes.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the final minutes of regulation and the entirety of the overtime period, a stark contrast to the flow established earlier. Stephen F. Austin, fueled by the hot shooting of guard Harmanie Dominguez, had seized control after halftime. After trailing 28-26 at the break, the Ladyjacks erupted for a 22-point third quarter, building a lead that stretched to as many as 11 points. Dominguez, who finished with a game-high 19 points, hit three of her team’s nine three-pointers during this surge, seemingly putting the home team in command.

McNeese State’s offense, however, refused to capitulate. The Cowgirls chipped away, not with shooting efficiency but with sheer volume generated by offensive rebounds and forced turnovers. They finished with a staggering 29 offensive boards, leading to 29 second-chance points, and forced 23 Stephen F. Austin turnovers, converting them into 24 points. The Ladyjacks, by contrast, managed only eight offensive rebounds and six points off 14 McNeese State turnovers.

The Cowgirls’ relentless work on the glass and defensive pressure slowly eroded the Stephen F. Austin lead. With under a minute to play in regulation and trailing by three, McNeese State guard Jalencia Pierre drove for a crucial layup to cut the deficit to one. After a defensive stop, the Cowgirls had a chance to win in regulation, but a Dakota Howard turnaround jumper missed, sending the game to overtime tied at 60.

The extra period belonged entirely to McNeese State. The Cowgirls scored the first six points, a run ignited by Pierre’s jumper and capped by consecutive putbacks from forward Lexi Alexander, who was instrumental on both ends. Alexander, who posted 13 points, two blocks, and numerous key rebounds, also blocked an Ashlyn Traylor-Walker layup attempt early in overtime to preserve momentum.

Stephen F. Austin’s offense, so fluid in the third quarter, completely seized up under the continued defensive pressure, managing only four points in the five-minute overtime on 1-for-8 shooting. The Ladyjacks’ final chance to close the gap vanished when Key Roseby’s three-pointer with 1:16 left made it 66-64, as McNeese State closed the game with four made free throws from Pierre to seal the victory.

Pierre, the 5-foot-5 guard from Springfield, Louisiana, led the Cowgirls with 13 points and five assists, orchestrating the offense through its struggles. Howard, a 5-11 forward from Shreveport, Louisiana, battled inside for a team-high 20 points and was central to the rebounding effort. For Stephen F. Austin, Dominguez’s 19 points led the way, while Kaylinn Kemp added 10 points, but the team’s six total assists against 23 turnovers underscored their offensive disintegration.

The victory extends McNeese State’s winning streak to four games and solidifies their strong position in the conference race. Stephen F. Austin, which had won three of its last four, will look to regroup quickly. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale on March 2 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a rematch that could carry significant postseason implications.

The announced attendance at William R. Johnson Coliseum was 1,843.
