Texas at Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging Texas team aims to continue its dominant run through the Southeastern Conference when it visits a struggling Florida squad at the O’Connell Center on Thursday night.
The Longhorns (19-2, 6-2 SEC), whose only losses this season are narrow road defeats to then-South Carolina and LSU, have won four of their last five. They are coming off a commanding 80-35 victory over Texas A&M on Jan. 18, where their defense stifled the Aggies to a season-low opponent score.
Texas is led by star guard Madison Booker, who has been a consistent force. Over her last six games, Booker is averaging 19.5 points and 4.2 assists, including a 28-point performance at Missouri and a 24-point outing in the loss at South Carolina. Her versatility fuels one of the nation’s most efficient offenses.
Florida (13-9, 2-6) seeks to halt a concerning slide, having lost six of its last seven conference games. The Gators are reeling from an 89-60 road loss to LSU on Monday. Their season has been marked by near misses, including a 94-89 overtime loss at Kentucky and a five-point loss to South Carolina.
The Gators will rely on the dynamic play of guard Liv McGill, who has posted impressive stat lines despite the losses. McGill recorded a 28-point, 9-rebound, 7-assist game in a win over Missouri and scored 32 points in the SEC opener at Tennessee. Her ability to score and facilitate will be critical against Texas’s stout defense.
Historically, the Longhorns have controlled the pace with physical defense and efficient scoring. Florida, averaging 74.2 points per game, will need a high-performance night from McGill and improved defensive intensity to challenge a Texas team allowing just 54.9 points per contest.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
Texas next hosts Oklahoma on Feb. 1. Florida travels to Vanderbilt on Feb. 1.
