Booker Leads Texas to Dominant Road Win Over Florida
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns, stung by consecutive road losses to top-tier Southeastern Conference opponents earlier this month, delivered a decisive statement of resilience Thursday night. Led by a dominant 24-point performance from Madison Booker, Texas methodically dispatched the Florida Gators 88-68 at Exactech Arena at the O’Connell Center.
The victory, witnessed by a crowd of 2,259, snapped a brief two-game skid for the Longhorns and improved their record to 20-2 overall and 7-2 in the SEC. Florida fell to 13-10 and 4-5 in conference play.
From the opening tip, Texas established a physical, defensive-minded presence that Florida struggled to match for sustained periods. While the first quarter ended with Texas holding a narrow 16-19 lead, the Longhorns seized control with a stifling defensive effort in the second period. Texas outscored Florida 26-12 in the quarter, turning a tight contest into a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish.
The pivotal stretch began with the Longhorns trailing 21-19 early in the second. Texas embarked on a 13-0 run, fueled by transition baskets and forced turnovers. Ashton Judd contributed four points during the surge, including a transition jumper assisted by Rori Harmon, while Booker’s driving layup capped the run to give Texas a 32-21 lead. Florida’s offense went cold, hampered by turnovers and contested shots, as Texas built a 42-31 halftime lead.
The most important part of the game was Texas’s immediate and forceful response to any semblance of a Florida rally in the third quarter. After the Gators’ Me’Arah O’Neal converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 35-32, Texas answered with a 7-0 spurt. Booker hit a pull-up jumper, Harmon added a turnaround, and Justice Carlton finished inside to push the lead back to 12. Later, when Florida closed to 40-38, the Longhorns again had a reply, this time a 7-0 run bookended by a Kyla Oldacre jump shot and a Aaliyah Crump three-pointer, re-establishing an 11-point cushion. This pattern of answering every Florida push with a bigger one of their own extinguished any hope of a home comeback.
Booker, the 6-foot-1 guard from Ridgeland, Mississippi, was the engine for Texas, adding four assists and a block to her game-high point total in 33 minutes. She consistently broke down the Florida defense, creating opportunities for herself and her teammates. She was supported by a balanced scoring attack. Oldacre, the 6-foot-6 center, provided a strong interior presence with 12 points, while Crump came off the bench to provide a critical spark, scoring 14 points in just 17 minutes, including two three-pointers. Harmon directed the offense with five assists and eight points.
Florida was led by Laila Reynolds with 18 points and O’Neal, who posted 17 points and three blocks. Liv McGill facilitated the offense with eight assists and 15 points but was plagued by nine turnovers against persistent Texas pressure. The Gators shot poorly from the field and were ultimately undone by 22 total turnovers, which Texas converted into 28 points.
Texas shot efficiently from the floor, while Florida struggled to find its shooting rhythm. The Longhorns also won the battle on the glass and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities.
The Longhorns’ defense, which had shown cracks in the losses to LSU and South Carolina, was restored to its typically disruptive form. They held the Gators to their second-lowest scoring output in SEC play this season. The win keeps Texas firmly in the conference title race as they head into a demanding February schedule.
Florida, seeking a signature win to bolster its postseason resume, could not overcome its offensive inconsistencies and the Longhorns’ relentless pressure. The Gators will look to regroup on the road in their next outing.
Texas returns home to face Oklahoma on Sunday, while Florida travels to face Vanderbilt.
