Duke Women Cruise Past Miami in ACC Road Win
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — A dominant first half and a resilient response to a third-quarter surge propelled the Duke women’s basketball team to a 74-58 victory over Miami on Thursday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Watsco Center.
The Blue Devils (15-6, 8-2 ACC) seized control from the opening tip, building a commanding 21-9 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 39-23 advantage by halftime. Duke’s defense was the catalyst, forcing the Hurricanes into a disjointed offensive performance. Miami (12-9, 4-6) managed just one made three-pointer in 11 attempts for the game and committed 13 turnovers, which Duke converted into 19 points. The Blue Devils also tallied eight steals and five blocks.
Toby Fournier, a 6-foot-2 forward from Toronto, led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, adding two blocks. Guard Taina Mair of Boston contributed 18 points and five assists, orchestrating the offense effectively. Duke’s backcourt duo of Ashlon Jackson and Riley Nelson each dished out six assists, as the Blue Devils finished with 16 assists on 28 made field goals.
The most critical phase of the game came after halftime. The Hurricanes, sparked by the interior presence of Ra Shaya Kyle, erupted for a 27-point third quarter, cutting a 16-point deficit down to as few as six points. Kyle, a 6-foot-6 center from Marion, Indiana, scored 13 of her team-high 21 points in the period, fueling a 20-6 Miami run that brought the home crowd to life.
Facing the sudden momentum shift, Duke steadied itself to start the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils clamped down defensively, holding Miami to just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting in the final period. A key sequence saw Duke score seven unanswered points early in the quarter, with Delaney Thomas hitting a jumper and Jordan Wood sinking a three-pointer to push the lead back to 15 and effectively extinguish the comeback bid.
Miami’s Gal Raviv scored 16 points, but the Hurricanes’ offense struggled overall, posting an offensive rating of 83.3 points per 100 possessions. The Hurricanes did outscore Duke 36-26 in the paint, but their inability to connect from the perimeter — alongside Duke’s 7-for-13 shooting from three-point range — proved too large a gap to overcome.
Jordan Wood added 12 points for Duke, while Thomas finished with eight points, two blocks and a steal. For Miami, Soma Okolo provided a boost off the bench with nine points in 12 minutes.
The victory extends Duke’s winning streak to four games. The Blue Devils return home to face Wake Forest on Sunday. Miami, which has lost three of its last four, will host Syracuse on Sunday.
