Oregon Ducks Dominate Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Big Ten Women’s Basketball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — The Oregon Ducks used a dominant second-quarter surge to build an insurmountable lead and cruised to a 74-53 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a non-conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sparsely attended Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Oregon, now 16-7, seized control with a 25-point second period, holding Rutgers to just nine points in the frame to turn a narrow three-point lead after one quarter into a 44-25 halftime advantage. The Ducks’ defense was the catalyst, forcing eight Scarlet Knight turnovers in the quarter and converting them into 12 points. Rutgers never recovered, trailing by double digits for the entire second half as Oregon’s lead ballooned to as many as 24 points.

The most critical stretch of the game occurred between the end of the first quarter and deep into the second. Leading 19-16 after a back-and-forth opening period, Oregon unlocked its offense while simultaneously clamping down defensively. A 13-2 run over a four-minute span broke the game open. Guard Ari Long of Moreno Valley, California, was central to the burst, contributing a steal and a driving layup, then assisting on a three-pointer by Avary Cain. The Ducks’ ball pressure was relentless, with steals from Long, Mia Jacobs and Sofia Bell leading directly to easy transition scores. By the time Katie Fiso of Seattle found Mia Jacobs for a layup with 5:29 left in the half, Oregon led 38-20, and the outcome was effectively decided.

Ehis Etute, a guard from Dudelange, Luxembourg, led all scorers with 17 points for Oregon, showcasing an efficient interior game. Long added 12 points, three assists and was a disruptive force defensively. Fiso orchestrated the offense with a game-high seven assists to go with 12 points, while Jacobs, from Perth, Australia, chipped in 10 points. The Ducks shot 44.6% from the field and won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Rutgers 44-31, including a decisive 12-5 edge on the offensive boards that led to 13 second-chance points.

Rutgers, which fell to 9-12, was led by Lauryn Swann’s 13 points off the bench. Zachara Perkins of Houston added 11 points and two blocks. The Scarlet Knights struggled mightily with Oregon’s length and athleticism, shooting just 36.2% from the field and committing 15 turnovers, which the Ducks converted into 20 points. Rutgers also went cold from beyond the arc, making only 6 of 20 three-point attempts.

Oregon’s offensive rating of 104.6 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Rutgers’ anemic 73.3, underscoring the Ducks’ efficiency and the Scarlet Knights’ offensive woes. While Rutgers showed brief signs of life with an 18-point third quarter, they could never string together enough stops to mount a legitimate threat, as Oregon answered every mini-run and maintained a comfortable margin throughout the final twenty minutes.

The game was part of the Big Ten’s scheduling alliance and drew an announced crowd of 1,704. Oregon, which had split its last four games, righted the ship with a comprehensive road performance. Rutgers, coming off a 28-point home loss to Washington two days prior, continued to search for consistency in a challenging season.

Oregon next travels to face Maryland on Saturday. Rutgers begins a two-game West Coast trip at Southern California on Sunday.
