Holy Cross Outlasts Colgate in Overtime Thriller
WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit and a dramatic fourth-quarter collapse, the Holy Cross women’s basketball team survived a monumental scare from a resilient Colgate squad, escaping with a 60-50 overtime victory in a Patriot League contest Wednesday night at the Hart Recreation Center.
The Crusaders, who led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter and seemed in control for long stretches, watched a 15-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate completely, forcing an extra period before finally subduing the Raiders.
Holy Cross improved to 12-8 overall and strengthened its position in the conference standings. Colgate, despite the valiant effort, fell to 5-14, extending a difficult season that has now seen eight of its losses come by single digits or in overtime.
The game’s defining sequence, and its most important part, arrived in the final two minutes of regulation. With Holy Cross leading 45-37 and seemingly poised to close out the win, Colgate unleashed an 8-0 run fueled by desperation and defensive pressure. The Raiders’ Amarah Streiff nailed a critical three-pointer with 48 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 45-43. After Holy Cross’s Kaitlyn Flanagan split a pair of free throws to make it 46-43, Colgate’s Ella Meabon drove and hit a tough layup with 14 seconds remaining to pull within one.
On the ensuing inbound play, Holy Cross’s Kendall Eddy was fouled but missed both free throws, giving Colgate a chance to win or tie with 13 seconds left. The Raiders worked the ball to Meabon, who calmly sank a mid-range jumper with 2 seconds on the clock, tying the game at 46 and sending the 393 fans in attendance into a frenzy and the contest to overtime.
The overtime period, however, belonged entirely to Holy Cross. The Crusaders, perhaps shaken from their late regulation lapse, regrouped decisively. They scored the first four points and never looked back, outscoring a visibly exhausted Colgate team 15-5 in the extra frame. The Raiders managed just one field goal in overtime, a three-pointer from Madison Schiller, as Holy Cross dominated the paint and capitalized on free throws to seal the win.
Colgate’s effort was spearheaded by a heroic performance from Ella Meabon. The sophomore guard from Fairport, New York, played 39 minutes and scored a game-high 24 points, including the clutch basket that forced overtime. She added two assists. Madison Schiller of Wyckoff, New Jersey, provided crucial support with 9 points and 4 assists in a team-high 42 minutes. Abbey Ferguson of Holmdel, New Jersey, anchored the defense with three blocks.
For Holy Cross, balance and timely plays proved key. Kaitlyn Flanagan of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, led the Crusaders with 17 points, many coming in critical moments to stem Colgate rallies. Asia Wilson of Rochester, New York, provided a vital spark off the bench with 10 points, while Janie Bachmann of Holmdel, New Jersey, contributed 8 points and three blocks. Kendall Eddy of Haverhill, Massachusetts, filled the stat sheet with 5 points, 3 assists, and 3 blocks.
The statistical story highlighted Holy Cross’s advantages in key areas. The Crusaders dominated points off turnovers, converting Colgate’s 21 miscues into 24 points, while the Raiders managed only 6 points off Holy Cross’s turnovers. Holy Cross also controlled the interior, outscoring Colgate 24-14 in the paint, a disparity that grew more pronounced in overtime.
The game began with Holy Cross asserting itself early, using defensive pressure to force Colgate into a sluggish start. The Crusaders led 14-4 after the first quarter. Colgate chipped away in the second, primarily through Meabon’s efforts, to trail 23-17 at halftime. The third quarter was a defensive struggle, with Holy Cross taking a 29-27 lead into the final period before appearing to put the game away with a 16-point fourth quarter, only to see Colgate’s furious rally rewrite the script.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Holy Cross entered the game with an 85.4 percent probability to win, a projection that nearly proved disastrously wrong.
Holy Cross will look to build on the win when it hosts Army on Saturday. Colgate, searching for a way to turn close games into victories, returns home to face Lehigh on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Hamilton, New York, on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
