Southern Utah at Utah Valley
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) — A quick rematch with regional bragging rights on the line is set for Thursday when the Southern Utah Thunderbirds visit the Utah Valley Wolverines in a women’s college basketball matchup at the UCCU Center.
The Thunderbirds (11-7) will look to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Wolverines (8-8) 76-68 in Cedar City on Jan. 8. Southern Utah’s Brooklyn Fely scored 10 points in that victory, part of a recent stretch of strong play. Over her last six games, Fely is averaging 10.5 points, including an 18-point performance in a loss to Abilene Christian last Saturday.
Utah Valley seeks to even the score and halt a three-game skid. The Wolverines are coming off a 59-47 loss at Texas-Arlington, where guard Cambree Blackham led the team with 17 points. Blackham, a key facilitator, has averaged 8.5 points and 4.8 assists over her last six contests. She was held to nine points in the earlier meeting with Southern Utah.
Both teams have struggled for consistency in conference play. Southern Utah has lost three straight since its win over Utah Valley, while the Wolverines’ last win was a 69-67 victory over Abilene Christian on Jan. 3.
The game will feature contrasting styles. Southern Utah relies on Fely’s scoring versatility and looks to push the tempo, as evidenced by their 78-point outing against Utah Tech in late December. Utah Valley will lean on Blackham’s playmaking and aims to improve its offensive output after being held under 55 points in two of its last three games.
Thursday’s contest is the first of two meetings between the in-state foes over the final stretch of the season, with a second matchup scheduled for March 5, also in Vineyard. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST.
