Southern Utah Holds Off Utah Valley in Tight Women’s Basketball Contest
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit over grace, the Southern Utah Thunderbirds overcame a staggering 24 turnovers and a significant disparity in ball security to edge the Utah Valley Wolverines 64-60 in a tense women’s NCAA Division I basketball contest Thursday night at a sparsely attended UCCU Center.
The victory, sealed by four clutch free throws from Sierra Chambers in the final 16 seconds, completed a regular-season sweep for Southern Utah over its in-state foe and snapped a two-game losing skid for the Thunderbirds. It was a contest where Southern Utah’s resilience at the foul line and on the glass ultimately negated Utah Valley’s disruptive defense.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the final minute, a chaotic sequence that encapsulated the entire night. Trailing 58-56 with under 30 seconds to play, Utah Valley’s Kylee Mabry drove for a layup to tie the game, sending a charge through the home crowd of 1,113. On the ensuing inbound, Southern Utah’s Chambers was immediately fouled by Naia Tanuvasa with 16 seconds left.
Chambers, a 5-foot-8 guard from Danville, California, who played the entire 40 minutes, calmly sank both free throws to restore a two-point lead. Utah Valley called a timeout to advance the ball, but on the inbound pass, Mabry was called for stepping out of bounds, a critical turnover. Fouled again, Chambers returned to the line with seven seconds remaining and again made both shots, pushing the lead to 62-58 and effectively sealing the outcome.
The frantic finish was a product of a game that Utah Valley seemed to control for long stretches despite trailing for the final 19 minutes. The Wolverines’ defensive pressure was immense, forcing the 24 Thunderbird turnovers and converting them into 21 points. Utah Valley also tallied 17 steals and 17 assists, showcasing superior ball movement when they had possession. However, their own offensive inefficiency, shooting just 39% from the field and a paltry 6 of 8 from the free throw line, proved their undoing.
Southern Utah, by contrast, made its living at the charity stripe, hitting 19 of 22 attempts, including a perfect 8-for-8 in the decisive fourth quarter. They also won the rebounding battle 12-10 on the offensive glass, creating crucial second-chance opportunities despite their turnover woes.
The Thunderbirds were led by Chambers’ 16 points and four assists. Brooklyn Fely, a 6-foot forward from Orem, Utah, added 12 points and was a force inside, while Ava Uhrich contributed nine points and a game-high defensive presence with multiple key rebounds. Utah Valley was carried by Kaylee Headrick of Bluffdale, Utah, who scored a game-high 15 points, but the Wolverines’ offense often stalled outside of her efforts.
Southern Utah improved to 12-7 overall, while Utah Valley fell to 8-9. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Utah Valley entered with a 63.7% probability to win, making the Thunderbirds’ road victory a slight upset.
The game’s tempo was set early by Utah Valley’s defensive intensity, but Southern Utah’s ability to withstand that pressure and execute in the half-court, particularly in drawing fouls, formed the narrative. The Thunderbirds weathered a first quarter where they scored just 14 points and committed numerous turnovers, staying within striking distance because Utah Valley could not build a substantial lead.
A pivotal shift came in the third quarter. After a low-scoring first half that ended with Utah Valley leading 30-26, Southern Utah locked down defensively, holding the Wolverines to just 10 points in the period. A 7-0 Thunderbird run, capped by a Chambers 3-pointer, gave them a lead they would not relinquish, though Utah Valley’s relentless pressure ensured they were never comfortable.
The fourth quarter became a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes and two ties, setting the stage for the dramatic final seconds where Southern Utah’s composure at the line finally closed the door.
Both teams return to conference play Saturday. Southern Utah hosts Utah Tech, while Utah Valley welcomes California Baptist.
