Eastern Illinois at Southern Indiana

Preview: Struggling Panthers Face Surging Screaming Eagles in OVC Clash

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Thursday night when the surging Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles host the struggling Eastern Illinois Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference women’s basketball matchup at the Physical Activities Center.

Southern Indiana (13-4 overall) enters as one of the conference’s hottest teams, having won five of its last six games. The Screaming Eagles are coming off a hard-fought 72-67 road victory at Tennessee State on Saturday, powered by a season-high 29 points from standout guard Ali Saunders.

Saunders has been the engine for Southern Indiana, averaging 20.0 points over her last six contests. She logged 45 minutes and dished eight assists in a Jan. 15 overtime win at Tennessee Tech, showcasing her durability and playmaking.

Eastern Illinois (3-16) seeks to halt a two-game skid and find consistency after a 47-55 loss at Arkansas-Little Rock last Thursday. The Panthers have shown brief flashes, including back-to-back home wins over Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State earlier this month, but have struggled to maintain momentum.

The Panthers will lean on guard Sydney-James Desroches, who scored 20 points in a narrow loss to Southeast Missouri State on New Year’s Day and followed with a 14-point effort at Little Rock. Her versatility was on display in a Jan. 3 game where she grabbed 10 rebounds.

Southern Indiana’s defense, which has held opponents to 43 and 46 points in recent home wins, will test an Eastern Illinois offense averaging just 58.2 points per game. The Screaming Eagles won last season’s meeting 68-52.

Thursday’s contest begins a critical two-game homestand for Southern Indiana as it pursues the OVC regular-season title. Eastern Illinois continues a difficult road stretch, looking to spring an upset before returning home next week.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
