Marshall at Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A key Conference USA women’s basketball rematch awaits Saturday when the Marshall Thundering Herd visit the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs at Constant Convocation Center.
Marshall (15-4 overall, 4-1 C-USA) enters with the league’s best record but is looking to rebound from a stunning 80-43 non-conference road loss at James Madison on Thursday. The Thundering Herd had won four straight prior to that defeat, including a 77-70 home victory over Old Dominion on Jan. 7.
Old Dominion (11-7, 2-3) has alternated wins and losses over its past five games and is coming off a 65-54 home win over Appalachian State on Wednesday. The Lady Monarchs will seek to avenge their earlier loss to Marshall and protect their home court.
A player to watch for Old Dominion is guard En’Dya Buford, who is coming off an 18-point performance against Appalachian State and scored 22 points in a double-overtime win over Georgia Southern on Jan. 1. She had 11 points in the first meeting with Marshall.
For the Thundering Herd, guard TreShondra Williams will aim for a bounce-back performance. She scored seven points in nine minutes off the bench in the loss to James Madison after being held to two points in 17 minutes in the previous win over Old Dominion.
The matchup features a contrast in recent momentum. Marshall’s potent offense, which averages over 75 points per game, was stifled in its last outing, while Old Dominion’s defense has held its last two home opponents to 54 and 65 points, respectively.
Saturday’s contest is the second of two regular-season meetings between the teams. Following this game, Marshall travels to face Southern Mississippi on Jan. 22, while Old Dominion hits the road to play Arkansas State on Jan. 21.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST in Norfolk.
