Lewis-Eutsey’s 31 Points Not Enough as Old Dominion Edges Marshall in Overtime
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a dramatic collapse, the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs erased a 22-point second-quarter deficit and survived a last-second scare in regulation before outlasting the Marshall Thundering Herd 84-82 in overtime in a Conference USA women’s basketball thriller Saturday at the Constant Convocation Center.
The most pivotal sequence of the contest, and the catalyst for the stunning comeback, was a monumental scoring drought by Marshall that spanned the final 4 minutes, 42 seconds of the second quarter and the first 4:35 of the third. During that crippling 9:17 stretch, the Thundering Herd failed to score a single point, missing 11 consecutive field goal attempts and committing five turnovers.
This dry spell completely reversed the game’s trajectory. Marshall, which had led 35-13 after a Peyton Ilderton 3-pointer with 4:34 left in the second quarter, watched its commanding advantage evaporate. Old Dominion closed the first half on a staggering 39-8 run, fueled by aggressive defense that generated eight steals in the second quarter alone. The Lady Monarchs took a 52-43 lead into halftime, having outscored Marshall 29-8 in the second period.
The contest was a tale of two halves and a mirror image of the teams’ meeting just 10 days prior, which Marshall won 77-70. This time, Old Dominion’s early offense was blistering. Led by En’Dya Buford and Simone Cunningham, the Lady Monarchs shot 69% in the first quarter to build a 29-19 lead. Marshall responded with a 16-0 run of its own, powered by Timaya Lewis-Eutsey’s relentless drives and Kassie Ingram’s bench shooting, to seize that 22-point lead early in the second.
Lewis-Eutsey, a guard from Trenton, New Jersey, was spectacular in defeat, scoring a game-high 31 points and adding six assists and five steals in 41 minutes. Her backcourt counterpart, Old Dominion’s En’Dya Buford, answered with 21 points and six assists, providing crucial stability during Marshall’s offensive freeze.
After Old Dominion’s massive run, the third quarter belonged to Marshall again, as they locked down defensively. The Thundering Herd held the Lady Monarchs to just 12 points in the period, clawing back to tie the game at 64 heading to the fourth. The final quarter was a tense, defensive struggle with neither team leading by more than four points.
Regulation ended in heart-stopping fashion. With Marshall trailing 70-68, Lewis-Eutsey drove and scored a layup with 37 seconds remaining to tie the game. Old Dominion called timeout and set up a play for Buford, whose driving layup attempt was off the mark. Simone Cunningham grabbed the offensive rebound but her put-back attempt at the buzzer was off target, sending the game to overtime tied at 70.
In the extra period, Old Dominion never trailed. Simaru Fields of Gulfport, Mississippi, was the catalyst, scoring seven of her 16 points in overtime, including a critical 3-pointer that put the Lady Monarchs ahead 76-73. Marshall had a chance to tie in the final seconds. After Fields made one of two free throws to give ODU an 84-82 lead with six seconds left, Marshall inbounded to halfcourt and called timeout with 4.1 seconds remaining. The ensuing play found Meredith Maier, who launched a contested 3-pointer from the wing as time expired, but it caromed off the rim, sealing the Old Dominion victory.
Maier, from Fairmont, West Virginia, finished with 14 points for Marshall. Cunningham added 15 points for Old Dominion, while Riley Stack provided a key interior presence with 10 points off the bench.
Statistically, the game was remarkably even. Marshall shot 47.5% from the field to Old Dominion’s 46.9%. The Thundering Herd hit 10 3-pointers to the Lady Monarchs’ six and won the turnover battle 18-15, converting those into 19 points. Old Dominion’s advantage came at the foul line, where they made 18 of 21 attempts compared to Marshall’s 14 of 18, and on the glass, with a 34-28 rebounding edge that included nine offensive boards.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Marshall, which fell to 15-5 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA. Old Dominion improved to 12-7 and 3-2 in league play. An announced crowd of 2,495 witnessed the comeback.
Marshall next travels to face Southern Mississippi on Thursday. Old Dominion visits Arkansas State on Wednesday.
