Siena at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play will meet Wednesday when the Siena Saints visit the Sacred Heart Pioneers in a women’s basketball matchup.

Both teams enter with identical 6-9 overall records. The game at the William Pitt Center features a contrast in recent form. Siena has dropped its last two contests, including an 82-65 home loss to Merrimack on Saturday. Sacred Heart also looks to rebound from a 65-49 road defeat at Quinnipiac on Saturday.

The Saints will lean on guard Nicole Melious, who has been a consistent offensive force. She scored 19 points in the loss to Merrimack, marking her third 19-point performance in the last five games. Over that stretch, she is averaging 16.8 points per game.

The Pioneers counter with forward Amelia Wood, who is coming off a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds against Quinnipiac. Wood has been prolific, averaging 18.2 points and 5.8 rebounds over her last six games. She erupted for 26 points, five rebounds and four assists in a win over Niagara on Jan. 1.

Siena’s season has been marked by streaks, with a recent three-game winning streak followed by the two consecutive losses. Sacred Heart had won three straight before the Quinnipiac loss.

In the all-time series, Sacred Heart holds a narrow 4-3 advantage, though the teams have not met since the 2021-22 season. Wednesday’s contest represents a key opportunity for either squad to climb back to the .500 mark in MAAC play.

Following this game, Siena will host Saint Peter’s on Saturday. Sacred Heart hits the road to face Rider on Saturday.
