Amelia Wood Leads Sacred Heart Past Siena in Women’s Basketball
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter defensive stand and a career-high 21 points from Amelia Wood propelled the Sacred Heart women’s basketball team to a 70-58 victory over Siena on Wednesday afternoon at the William Pitt Center.
The Pioneers, who improved to 7-9 overall, seized control of the non-conference game by holding the Saints to a mere four points in the second period. That defensive effort transformed a 23-17 first-quarter deficit into a 37-27 halftime lead from which Siena never recovered.
Wood, a 6-foot sophomore from Wynantskill, New York, was the catalyst on both ends of the floor. She played 35 minutes, adding two assists and two blocks to her scoring output. Her backcourt partner, sophomore Sophie Nascimento of Scarsdale, New York, provided crucial support with 17 points, including a momentum-shifting three-pointer late in the second quarter that capped a 20-4 Sacred Heart run for the period.
Siena, which fell to 6-10, opened the game with impressive offensive rhythm, shooting efficiently to build its six-point lead after one quarter. Francesca Schiro, a junior guard from Hillsborough, New Jersey, led the Saints with 17 points and four assists. But the Saints’ offense ground to a halt in the second quarter, plagued by turnovers and rushed shots against an intensified Sacred Heart defense.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred over a five-minute span bridging the first and second quarters. With Sacred Heart trailing 25-19, the Pioneers unleashed a 16-0 run. Wood ignited the surge with a three-pointer, and Nalyce Dudley of Norwich, Connecticut, who finished with 12 points, contributed a layup and defensive pressure. The run was punctuated by a Wood steal and layup, followed by Nascimento’s three-pointer, pushing the Pioneer lead to 35-25 and forcing a Siena timeout.
Siena showed signs of life after halftime, cutting the deficit to eight points on several occasions in the third quarter behind Schiro and Nicole Melious, who scored 11. Each time, Sacred Heart had an answer, often from Wood or Nascimento, to maintain a comfortable margin. The Pioneers led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter before settling on the final 12-point victory.
Sacred Heart’s Sierra Johnson, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, orchestrated the offense with four assists, while Siena’s Caydence Hadley of Rochester, New York, added six points and two assists off the bench.
The game, organized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, drew an attendance of 253. Sacred Heart will look to build on the win when it travels to face Rider on Saturday. Siena, which has lost three of its last four games, returns home to host Saint Peter’s on Saturday.
