Ohio State Routs Penn State in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Matchup
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive pressure, the Ohio State Buckeyes overwhelmed the Penn State Lady Lions 108-84 in a Big Ten women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Value City Arena.
The 16th-ranked Buckeyes, now 16-2 overall and riding a four-game conference win streak, never trailed, using a dominant second quarter to build an insurmountable lead against a Penn State team that fell to 7-11. The game was effectively decided in that period, as Ohio State outscored Penn State 33-30 to turn a modest five-point lead after one quarter into a 54-46 halftime advantage, a margin that would only grow.
The most important stretch of the game came early in that pivotal second quarter. Leading 26-23, Ohio State unleashed a devastating 10-0 run in just over 90 seconds, fueled by its trademark defensive intensity. The surge began with a Chance Gray steal leading to a Kennedy Cambridge layup. After a Penn State turnover, Gray hit a three-pointer, and following another Lady Lions miscue, Jaloni Cambridge capped the run with a three-pointer of her own, pushing the lead to 36-23 and forcing a Penn State timeout. This sequence typified the Buckeyes’ strategy, converting defensive stops into quick, often three-point, scoring opportunities that broke the game open.
Ohio State’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Buckeyes shot 56.8% from the field and an impressive 47.2% from three-point range, making 17 of 36 attempts. They scored 108 points on just 89 possessions, an offensive rating of 121.1. Equally critical was their defensive pressure, which generated 14 steals and contributed to 24 Penn State turnovers, which Ohio State converted into 33 points.
Penn State, despite the lopsided final score, showed offensive fight, shooting 46.7% overall and 34.4% from deep. The Lady Lions were led by Moriah Murray’s 25 points, including seven three-pointers, and a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double from center Gracie Merkle. Kiyomi McMiller added 20 points and seven assists. However, their 24 turnovers and a stark disadvantage at the free-throw line, making just 3 of 9 attempts compared to Ohio State’s 7 of 13, proved too much to overcome.
Ohio State’s attack was a balanced and high-octane affair, led by star guard Jaloni Cambridge. The sophomore from Nashville, Tennessee, poured in a game-high 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-9 from three-point range, while adding six assists. She was complemented perfectly by Finnish center Elsa Lemmilä, who scored 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Chance Gray added 23 points and five assists, and Kennedy Cambridge facilitated the offense with eight assists.
The Buckeyes’ second-quarter explosion set the tone, and they maintained control throughout the second half, leading by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 24-point victory. The attendance was 5,884.
Penn State, which has lost five of its last six games, will look to regroup at home against Rutgers on Sunday. Ohio State, which entered the game as a 20.5-point favorite and saw the total score of 192 easily surpass the over/under line of 168.5, faces a quick turnaround with a neutral-site game against Texas Christian on Monday in Newark, New Jersey, before returning home to host Indiana next Thursday.
