American at Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — A surging Navy squad will look to continue its climb in the Patriot League standings when it hosts a struggling American team on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
The Midshipmen (9-6) have won three of their last four games, including a dominant 97-58 road victory at Lafayette on Saturday. Navy’s offense has averaged 83 points during its current two-game win streak.
American (4-11) seeks to halt a two-game skid after falling 65-48 at Holy Cross last Saturday. The Eagles have struggled to find consistent offense, averaging just 56.2 points per game this season.
The matchup features two of the conference’s top individual performers. Navy is led by dynamic guard Zanai Barnett-Gay, who is coming off a 26-point, 11-rebound, 7-assist performance against Lafayette. Over her last five games, she is averaging 17.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists.
American will counter with forward Charlotte Tuhy, who recorded a 15-rebound double-double in the loss to Holy Cross. Tuhy has been a bright spot for the Eagles, scoring in double figures in four of her last six contests, including a 20-point effort in a win over UMBC on Dec. 21.
Navy won both meetings last season, including a 72-56 victory in Annapolis. The Midshipmen’s balanced attack, which saw Zoe Mesuch add 22 points and 8 assists alongside Barnett-Gay’s big day on Saturday, presents a significant challenge for American’s defense.
The Eagles will need more scoring support behind Tuhy. Madisyn Moore-Nicholson and Molly Driscoll combined for 20 points against Holy Cross, but American shot just 30.2% from the field as a team.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game is the first of two regular-season meetings between the schools, with the rematch set for Feb. 7 in Washington, D.C.
