Navy Women Pull Away Early, Cruise Past American in Patriot League Matchup

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Interstat) — The Navy women’s basketball team, led by a dominant performance from sophomore guard Zanai Barnett-Gay, overwhelmed American from the opening tip and cruised to an 86-68 victory in a Patriot League matchup Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.

The Midshipmen (10-6, 3-1 Patriot League) seized control with a 22-6 first-quarter blitz, capitalizing on a frigid start by the Eagles. American (4-12, 2-2) missed its first eight field goal attempts and committed five turnovers in the opening period, allowing Navy to build a lead that would never be seriously threatened.

Barnett-Gay, a 5-foot-8 guard from Glenn Dale, Maryland, was the catalyst, finishing with a game-high 24 points and six assists in 34 minutes. She orchestrated the early onslaught, scoring or assisting on 12 of Navy’s first 22 points. Her backcourt partner, Zoe Mesuch, added 17 points and four assists, while Julianna Almeida and Christina Liggio each chipped in 13 points.

The most important stretch of the game was its inception. Navy’s defensive pressure was immediate and disruptive. After winning the opening tip, the Midshipmen forced a missed jumper from American’s Molly Driscoll, and on the ensuing possession, Almeida converted a layup off a Mesuch feed just 15 seconds into the game. This set a relentless tone. A steal by Morgan Demos led to another Mesuch layup, and Barnett-Gay soon found Demos for a bucket to make it 8-0 before American had even gotten a shot to fall.

American’s first points came on a Molly Driscoll layup nearly eight minutes into the contest, but by then the damage was profound. Navy answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Barnett-Gay-assisted three-pointer from Mesuch, to extend the lead to 18-2. The Eagles shot a dismal 2-for-15 in the quarter and trailed by 16 after ten minutes.

To their credit, the Eagles showed fight in the second half, particularly in the third quarter where they outscored Navy 21-19 behind 11 points from Charlotte Tuhy. The junior forward from Madison, New Jersey, led American with 19 points. Driscoll added 13 points, six assists and a block.

Every time American managed to string together a few baskets, however, Navy had a response, often from Barnett-Gay. Her three-pointer with 1:15 left in the third quarter pushed the lead back to 61-52 after American had cut it to six. Early in the fourth, after the Eagles had closed to within 65-57, Barnett-Gay hit a jumper and completed a three-point play to spark a 7-0 Navy run that effectively put the game out of reach at 72-57.

Navy’s interior defense, anchored by 6-foot-3 freshman Quinn Boettinger, was also pivotal. Boettinger recorded four blocks in just 16 minutes of action, altering numerous other attempts. The Midshipmen shared the ball effectively, finishing with 22 assists on 33 made field goals.

The loss snapped a two-game Patriot League winning streak for American, which had defeated Colgate and Boston University earlier in January. Navy, meanwhile, won its third straight conference game following a loss to Holy Cross to open league play. Barnett-Gay has been instrumental in that streak, averaging over 20 points per game during the run.

The announced attendance was 588. The game was played as part of the Patriot League schedule.

American will look to rebound at home against Army on Saturday. Navy continues its homestand, also on Saturday, against Lehigh.
