Bowling Green at Western Michigan
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — A surging Bowling Green Falcons squad will look to continue its Mid-American Conference momentum against a Western Michigan Broncos team seeking consistency when the women’s basketball programs meet Wednesday at University Arena.
The Falcons (9-6, 1-1 MAC) enter off a decisive 65-48 road victory at Northern Illinois on Saturday, showcasing a balanced attack. Guard Kendal Moxey led the way with 15 points, continuing a stretch of strong play. The junior is averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds over her last two MAC contests, including a 16-point, 15-rebound double-double in a loss to Central Michigan on Jan. 3.
Conversely, Western Michigan (5-9, 2-1 MAC) aims to rebound from a 59-46 loss at Toledo, where offensive struggles resurfaced. The Broncos’ conference start has been a rollercoaster, sandwiching wins over Akron and Buffalo around the Toledo defeat. Guard Kailey Starks remains the offensive catalyst, averaging 14.3 points in MAC play, including a 16-point effort against the Rockets.
Bowling Green’s record is bolstered by a perfect 6-0 mark at home, but the Falcons are just 3-6 in road and neutral-site games. Their victories have often been dominant, including three wins by 40 or more points against non-Division I opponents, but they have yet to find sustained success away from home.
Western Michigan has faced a daunting non-conference schedule, with losses to power conference foes Ohio State, Michigan State and Indiana, as well as Atlantic 10 contender Massachusetts. Their two MAC wins equal their total from the entire non-conference slate, offering hope for a turnaround.
The matchup pits Bowling Green’s recent efficiency against Western Michigan’s defensive effort at home, where the Broncos held Akron to 48 points in their last outing in Kalamazoo. Containing Moxey and guard Paige Kohler, who played all 40 minutes and dished five assists against NIU, will be a priority for the Broncos’ defense.
Wednesday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the cross-divisional rivals, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 18 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
