Bowling Green Holds Off Western Michigan Rally in MAC Women’s Basketball
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — Bowling Green used a dominant third-quarter surge to create separation and then weathered a frantic fourth-quarter rally by Western Michigan to secure a 61-54 victory in a Mid-American Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at University Arena.
The Falcons, who led 27-26 at halftime, outscored the Broncos 21-8 in the pivotal third period to take a commanding 14-point lead into the final quarter. Western Michigan mounted a comeback attempt, scoring 20 points in the fourth, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
Bowling Green improved to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in the MAC, while Western Michigan fell to 5-10 and 1-2.
The game’s decisive stretch began late in the second quarter and extended through the third. With the Falcons clinging to a one-point lead, a 9-0 run bridging the halves gave them their first double-digit advantage. The Falcons then locked down defensively in the third, holding the Broncos to just three made field goals while forcing eight turnovers. A key sequence saw Lauren Gerken block a shot, leading to a transition opportunity that ended with a Kaia Woods pull-up jumper, capping a 15-2 run that put Bowling Green ahead 48-34 late in the quarter.
Western Michigan refused to capitulate, opening the fourth quarter on a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 52-46 with 5:47 remaining. The Broncos’ full-court pressure caused problems, and Alli Carlson’s driving layup with 20 seconds left brought Western Michigan within 59-54. The Falcons, however, sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final seconds.
Bowling Green’s defense was the cornerstone of the win, generating 22 Western Michigan turnovers and converting them into 19 points. The Falcons also recorded 10 steals, led by Johnea Donahue’s three. Offensively, the Falcons shared the scoring load effectively.
Kaia Woods and Lauren Gerken each scored 15 points to lead Bowling Green. Woods, a guard from Tiffin, Ohio, added four assists, while Gerken, a forward from Findlay, Ohio, hit three 3-pointers and contributed a block and a steal. Guard Paige Kohler finished with 13 points, and Donahue added eight points and a game-high five assists.
Western Michigan was led by a game-high 20 points from Kailey Starks, who also grabbed six rebounds. Alli Carlson scored 18 points and dished out two assists for the Broncos, who shot just 34.7% from the field for the game. Ariana Wilkes added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Despite the loss, Western Michigan was efficient from the free-throw line, making 14 of 15 attempts. Bowling Green struggled from the stripe, making only 12 of 20, which helped fuel the Broncos’ late rally.
The Falcons controlled the game’s tempo for long stretches, committing 17 turnovers to Western Michigan’s 22 and holding a 10-5 advantage in assists. Bowling Green also connected on nine 3-pointers compared to six for the home team.
Attendance at University Arena was 659.
Bowling Green will look to build on the win when it hosts Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. Western Michigan aims to rebound at home against Ball State, also on Saturday.
The most important part of the game was Bowling Green’s overwhelming third-quarter performance, where they outscored Western Michigan 21-8. This period transformed a narrow one-point halftime lead into a 14-point cushion. The Falcons’ defensive intensity skyrocketed, forcing eight Bronco turnovers and holding them to 3-of-12 shooting. This decisive stretch provided the necessary margin to withstand Western Michigan’s late push, as the Falcons’ offense, led by Gerken and Woods, found a consistent rhythm that had been absent in a sluggish first half.
