Portland State at Sacramento State
Preview: Portland State Vikings at Sacramento State Hornets
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Sacramento State Hornets look to build on a decisive conference win when they host the Portland State Vikings in a Big Sky women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Colberg Court.
The Hornets (7-8, 1-1 Big Sky) are coming off a dominant 60-39 victory over Weber State last Saturday, where their defense shined. Sacramento State will rely on the all-around play of guard Benthe Versteeg, who recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double with five assists in that win. Versteeg has been a consistent facilitator, averaging 5.0 assists over her last four games against Division I opponents.
Portland State (5-9, 1-1) aims to bounce back from a 72-63 home loss to Idaho State on Jan. 3. The Vikings are led by guard Kyleigh Brown, who is averaging 17.4 points per game in her last five contests. She scored 23 points in 38 minutes against Idaho State and has been the team’s primary offensive catalyst.
Sacramento State holds a slight edge in the standings and will have home-court advantage. Their defensive performance against Weber State, holding an opponent under 40 points, provides a blueprint. However, consistency has been an issue; they followed a 102-point offensive outburst against Simpson with a 46-point showing in a loss to Idaho State.
Portland State’s season has been marked by volatility, with a 32-point loss to Portland preceding a 23-point win over Seattle in non-conference play. Containing Versteeg and Hornets forward Keanna Salave’a, who had 13 points and 13 rebounds last game, will be a key challenge for the Vikings’ defense.
This game represents an early opportunity for both teams to establish momentum in the conference schedule. The Hornets won both meetings last season.
Tip-off is set for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.
