Hornets Edge Vikings in Tight Big Sky Conference Matchup
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by critical mistakes and clutch free throws, the Sacramento State women’s basketball team survived a furious second-half rally from Portland State to secure a 68-64 victory in a Big Sky Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Colberg Court.
The Hornets, who improved to 8-8 overall, appeared poised for a comfortable win after building a 38-29 halftime lead behind a dominant second quarter. They extended that advantage to 11 points early in the third quarter. However, the Vikings (5-10) mounted a sustained comeback, chipping away at the deficit with determined interior play and capitalizing on a stretch of stagnant Sacramento State offense. Portland State outscored the Hornets 18-12 in the third period and eventually tied the game in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for a tense final sequence.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the final 33 seconds with the score knotted at 64. Portland State, having fought all the way back from a double-digit deficit, committed a costly turnover when Kyleigh Brown was stripped by Sacramento State’s Jaety Mandaquit. The Hornets called a timeout to advance the ball with 33 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Portland State’s defense forced a difficult layup attempt from Benthe Versteeg that missed, but Natalie Picton secured the crucial offensive rebound and was fouled with 16 seconds left. Picton, a guard from Welland, Canada, calmly sank both free throws to put Sacramento State ahead 66-64.
Portland State had a chance to tie or take the lead on its final possession, but Cici Ellington’s mid-range jump shot with three seconds left only trimmed the deficit to two. The Vikings were then forced to foul immediately, sending Rubi Gray to the line with 0.2 seconds on the clock. Gray, a guard from Devonport, Australia, sealed the victory by making both free throws for the final margin.
The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Both teams had 69 possessions, but Sacramento State’s ability to force turnovers and limit its own proved decisive. The Hornets committed only eight turnovers while forcing 19 from Portland State, converting those into 21 points. The Vikings, meanwhile, scored just 16 points off Sacramento State’s miscues.
Portland State’s offense was carried by the duo of Kyleigh Brown and Cici Ellington. Brown, a guard from Silverton, Oregon, scored a team-high 18 points and dished out four assists in 35 minutes. Ellington, a forward from Portland, Oregon, added 13 points. Their efforts helped the Vikings score 40 points in the paint and shoot an efficient 10 for 11 from the free-throw line.
Sacramento State countered with a balanced and persistent attack led by Natalie Picton, who finished with a game-high 21 points, including the two decisive free throws. Rubi Gray contributed 18 points, and Jaety Mandaquit added 10. The Hornets overcame poor shooting—27 for 73 from the field and 6 for 22 from three-point range—by grabbing 17 offensive rebounds and earning 10 free-throw attempts, making eight.
The first half established the pattern of the game. After a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Sacramento State leading 18-15, the Hornets seized control in the second period with a 20-14 advantage. Their defensive pressure generated turnovers and transition opportunities, allowing them to build the nine-point halftime cushion that Portland State spent the entire second half trying to erase.
Despite the loss, Portland State showed resilience in battling back on the road against a team that entered the game as a significant favorite according to advanced metrics. The Vikings’ record in close games this season, however, continues to be a challenge.
The announced attendance at Colberg Court was 479. Both teams continue Big Sky Conference play on the road next Thursday, with Portland State traveling to face Northern Colorado and Sacramento State visiting Northern Arizona. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Portland on Feb. 7.
