Holy Cross Defeats American in Patriot League Women’s Basketball

WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — The Holy Cross women’s basketball team used a dominant interior performance and a stifling defensive effort to defeat American 65-48 in a Patriot League contest Saturday at the Hart Recreation Center.

The Crusaders improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Eagles fell to 4-11 and 2-2.

The most important part of the game was Holy Cross’s immediate and sustained control of the paint at both ends of the floor, which established a tone American could never overcome. From the opening tip, won by Holy Cross’s Meg Cahalan, the Crusaders’ size and defensive activity dictated the flow. American’s offensive struggles were profound and persistent. The Eagles committed 15 turnovers, leading to 12 Holy Cross points, and managed only three assists against seven for the Crusaders. Holy Cross also blocked six shots and recorded seven steals, consistently disrupting American’s offensive sets.

Simone Foreman led all scorers with 16 points and added seven rebounds for Holy Cross. Janie Bachmann provided a critical all-around performance with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Cahalan also scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Kendall Eddy filled the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.

For American, Charlotte Tuhy posted a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds, and Madisyn Moore-Nicholson added 11 points. Molly Driscoll contributed nine points. The Eagles shot just 29.3% from the field and 23.8% from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 66.0 on 73 possessions underscored a afternoon of inefficient offense.

Holy Cross, while shooting only 1-for-19 from beyond the arc, compensated by making 28 of 71 field goals overall and, crucially, by scoring 46 points in the paint compared to American’s 20. The Crusaders also capitalized on second chances, securing 10 offensive rebounds.

The game was effectively decided by a decisive stretch bridging the first and second quarters. After American’ Madisyn Moore-Nicholson hit a three-pointer to pull within 6-4 midway through the first, Holy Cross closed the period on a 10-2 run. The surge was fueled by interior scoring from Cahalan and Foreman, along with defensive stops that limited American to one field goal in the final five minutes. The Crusaders led 16-7 after one quarter.

Holy Cross extended its lead in the second quarter, with its advantage growing to as many as 15 points. The Eagles never mounted a serious threat in the second half, as the Crusaders’ lead fluctuated between 12 and 20 points. Holy Cross maintained its defensive pressure, and American could not put together a sustained run, shooting 5-for-21 in the third quarter as the outcome was cemented.

The victory keeps Holy Cross near the top of the early Patriot League standings. American, which had won two of its last three conference games entering Saturday, sees its modest momentum halted.

Holy Cross next travels to face Army on Wednesday. American visits Navy on the same night.
