Campbell Rallies Past Elon in Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Basketball
LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Jasmine Nivar scored 24 points and Campbell closed the game on a decisive 13-0 run to overcome a late deficit and defeat Elon 62-52 in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball game Friday night at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
The Fightin’ Camels, who led for only 4 minutes and 22 seconds of the contest, trailed 52-49 with just over four minutes to play before completely shutting down the Phoenix to secure the victory. Elon failed to score on its final 11 possessions, committing five turnovers and missing six shots as Campbell pulled away.
Campbell improved to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the CAA, while Elon fell to 6-9 and 1-2.
The most critical stretch of the game began with Campbell clinging to a 53-51 lead after N’na Konate’s layup with 4:10 remaining. Over the next three minutes, the Fightin’ Camels’ defense forced three consecutive shot-clock violations on Elon, suffocating the Phoenix offense. During that same span, Campbell’s Olivia Tucker converted a layup in transition and Nivar added two free throws to extend the lead to 57-51.
Elon’s offensive struggles were compounded by a series of turnovers in the final minute, allowing Campbell to seal the game at the foul line. Nivar, a 5-foot-10 guard from Apex, North Carolina, scored nine of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, including five free throws in the final 32 seconds. She also added two assists, a block and a steal in 36 minutes.
The Phoenix had controlled much of the game, responding each time Campbell threatened to take command. Elon trailed 17-10 after a sluggish first quarter but used a 15-9 second period to pull within 26-25 at halftime. LaNae’ Corbett, who led Elon with 17 points, was instrumental in keeping her team close, scoring 11 points in the first half.
Elon took its first lead since the opening minutes early in the third quarter and built a 44-42 advantage heading into the final period. A 3-pointer by Kamryn Doty and a layup by Corbett gave the Phoenix a 49-44 lead with 8:57 to play, their largest of the game. Campbell chipped away, setting the stage for the final, game-altering defensive stand.
Tucker supported Nivar with 16 points for Campbell, while Jasmine Felton added nine points. Ashanti Fox paced Elon beyond Corbett with 14 points and four assists, and Ashlee Shaw contributed nine points.
Campbell’s defense was anchored by Konate, the 6-foot-3 center from Switzerland, who blocked three shots and altered several others in just 14 minutes of action.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with both teams combining for 37 turnovers. Campbell capitalized on Elon’s 21 giveaways, scoring 19 points off those miscues.
A crowd of 775 watched the Fightin’ Camels win their second straight conference game following a road split last weekend. Elon, coming off a win over Hampton, saw its hopes for a second consecutive victory evaporate in the final four minutes.
Campbell next hosts William & Mary on Sunday. Elon continues its road swing at UNC Wilmington next Friday.
