Green Bay Women Cruise to Horizon League Victory at Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio (Interstat) — The Green Bay Phoenix delivered a commanding wire-to-wire victory Tuesday night, overwhelming the Wright State Raiders 89-55 in a Horizon League women’s basketball matchup at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

From the opening tip, which was won by Green Bay’s Meghan Schultz, the Phoenix established a tempo and defensive intensity that the Raiders could not match. The visitors built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never relented, methodically expanding their advantage each period before a crowd of 1,205.

The most decisive stretch of the contest came in the second quarter, where Green Bay effectively put the game out of reach. Leading 23-15 after one period, the Phoenix unleashed a 28-point offensive barrage in the second while holding Wright State to just 13 points. This 20-point swing over the first half transformed a competitive opening into a lopsided affair, with Green Bay taking a 51-28 lead into halftime. The run was fueled by efficient ball movement and a clear inside advantage, as the Phoenix consistently found high-percentage shots near the basket.

Jenna Guyer, a 6-foot-2 forward from Circle Pines, Minnesota, led all scorers with 21 points in just 25 minutes of action. She added four assists and a blocked shot, showcasing her versatility. She was instrumental in the first-half surge, scoring on a variety of post moves and put-backs.

Green Bay’s offense was a model of balance and unselfishness, with four players reaching double figures. Gracie Grzesk, a hometown product from Green Bay, Wisconsin, contributed 15 points. Carley Duffney, also from Green Bay, orchestrated the offense with a game-high seven assists to go with eight points. Off the bench, Meghan Schultz provided a significant spark with 10 points, all coming in the paint.

For Wright State, which fell to 5-10 overall, the offensive load was carried primarily by Breezie Williams. The 5-foot-5 guard from Canton, Ohio, fought for 20 points and three assists. Abbie Riddle of Baltimore, Ohio, added 15 points, but the Raiders struggled to find consistent scoring beyond that duo. The team was hampered by turnovers and a cold shooting night from beyond the arc.

Defensively, Green Bay was relentless, generating 11 steals and blocking three shots. The Phoenix defense disrupted Wright State’s offensive sets throughout the night, converting many of those takeaways into easy transition opportunities at the other end.

The victory improved Green Bay’s record to 9-5 overall and marked a strong rebound from a 66-50 road loss at Miami (Ohio) in their previous outing on Dec. 20. The Phoenix have now won four of their last five games. Wright State, which entered the game following a 96-53 loss at Kentucky on Dec. 19, has dropped three consecutive contests.

The game unfolded largely as predicted by advanced metrics, with Interstat’s ELO system giving Green Bay a 96.10 percent probability to win. The Phoenix lived up to that projection with a comprehensive performance on both ends of the floor.

Green Bay returns to action Friday to host Cleveland State, beginning a stretch of four of their next five games at home. Wright State looks to regroup Friday when they host Detroit. The two teams will meet again in a rematch in Green Bay on Jan. 29.
