Cal Poly at California
BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — The California Golden Bears will look to rebound from a narrow conference loss when they host the struggling Cal Poly Mustangs in nonconference women’s basketball action Sunday at Haas Pavilion.
California (8-5) enters the contest after a 61-57 home loss to Southern California on Dec. 21, a game in which it held a fourth-quarter lead. The Golden Bears have shown resilience this season, with all five losses coming by 11 points or fewer, including three by a single possession. Forward Sakima Walker has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in five straight games. She posted 13 points and a block against USC and is averaging 12.6 points and 2.6 blocks over her last five contests.
Cal Poly (2-9) seeks to halt a seven-game losing streak, its most recent defeat an 86-39 road loss to USC on Dec. 18. The Mustangs have faced a difficult schedule, with losses to power conference opponents USC, UCLA and Stanford, all by wide margins. Offensive production has been a significant challenge; the team has failed to reach 50 points in four of its last five games.
Guard Madison Butcher will be a key for the Mustangs. She led the team with 11 points in the loss to USC and is averaging 6.0 points per game over the recent five-game stretch. Alana Goosby, who had seven assists against USC, will be tasked with facilitating the offense against a California defense allowing just 60.2 points per game.
This matchup concludes the nonconference slate for both teams. California begins Atlantic Coast Conference play on Jan. 1 at North Carolina, while Cal Poly opens Big West Conference action the same day at UC San Diego.
Tipoff is set for Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, in Berkeley.
