Santa Clara Routs Hawaii in Women’s Basketball Showdown
HONOLULU (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, cruising to a decisive 76-57 victory over the Hawaii Warriors in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at a sparse Stan Sheriff Center.
From the opening tip, the Broncos established control, stifling the Warriors with a formidable defensive effort that set the tone for the entire contest. Santa Clara’s defense was the story of the first quarter, holding Hawaii to a mere eight points while building a 20-8 lead. The Broncos’ length and activity in the passing lanes disrupted the Warriors’ offensive flow from the outset.
The defensive intensity was spearheaded by a trio of standout performances. Maia Jones, a guard from Tasman, New Zealand, was a catalyst on both ends of the floor, finishing with 15 points, five assists and three blocked shots in just 21 minutes of action. Her backcourt mate, Kylee Fox of Richland, Washington, led all scorers with 18 points. In the paint, Sophie Glancey of Boise, Idaho, proved to be an immovable force, tallying a game-high 19 points while pulling down multiple key rebounds over her 32 minutes.
Hawaii, playing in front of a home crowd of 1,594, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against the swarming Santa Clara defense. The Warriors showed brief signs of life in the second and third quarters, but each time they attempted to mount a challenge, the Broncos had an answer, often from Jones or a timely basket from Glancey.
The Warriors were led by Imani Perez of Denver and Izzy Forsyth of Vancouver, Canada, who each contributed nine points. Ritorya Tamilo, a 6-foot-5 center from Auckland, New Zealand, added seven points off the bench, but Hawaii’s shooting woes and 19 turnovers proved too much to overcome.
Santa Clara’s offense was efficient and balanced. Beyond the trio of Jones, Fox and Glancey, the Broncos received valuable contributions from Ashley Hawkins, who dished out three assists, and Delainey Miller, who also recorded three assists. The Broncos shared the ball effectively, leading to high-percentage shots and a comfortable lead that ballooned to as many as 23 points in the second half.
With the win, Santa Clara improved its season record to 7-3, bouncing back decisively from a loss to Vermont just one day prior. The Broncos now look ahead to a home contest against Simpson on Dec. 6.
Hawaii’s record fell to 4-3 with the loss, marking their second consecutive defeat after falling to Lindenwood on Saturday. The Warriors will hit the road for their next contest, facing UC Davis on Thursday. The loss was a disappointment for Hawaii, which entered the game as a significant favorite according to statistical projections from Interstat’s ELO system.
