Lady Toppers Top Salukis for Road Win

CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by critical plays in the final minutes, the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers held off the Southern Illinois Salukis for a 60-52 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at SIU Arena.

The Lady Toppers, who led for the entirety of the contest, saw a once-comfortable advantage dwindle in the fourth quarter before securing the win at the free-throw line. The victory improved Western Kentucky’s record to 3-4, while Southern Illinois dropped to 1-5.

Western Kentucky guard Tia Shelling, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana, led all scorers with 16 points and was instrumental down the stretch, sinking four consecutive free throws in the final minute to extinguish any hope of a Salukis comeback. She added four assists and a block in 33 minutes of action.

She was complemented by a dominant performance from forward Zsófia Telegdy. The 6-foot-3 freshman from Budapest, Hungary, recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high six assists, controlling the paint on both ends of the floor during her 40 minutes of play.

The game was a tale of offensive inconsistency, with both teams struggling to find a consistent rhythm from the field. Western Kentucky built its lead in the first half, taking a 35-31 advantage into the locker room after a back-and-forth second quarter. The Lady Toppers extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Salukis 16-11 to carry a 51-42 margin into the final period.

Southern Illinois refused to capitulate, mounting a sustained challenge in the fourth quarter. The Salukis’ effort was spearheaded by guard Alayna Kraus, a 5-foot-8 hometown product from Okawville, Illinois, who poured in 19 points. Her scoring kept Southern Illinois within striking distance as the team’s defense intensified, holding Western Kentucky to just nine points in the final quarter.

With under a minute to play and the Salukis applying heavy pressure, the outcome hinged on execution. After a Southern Illinois turnover, the Lady Toppers worked the clock before finding Torri James for a crucial layup with 48 seconds remaining, pushing the lead back to two possessions. James, a 5-foot-11 forward from Clarksville, Tennessee, finished with eight points and three blocks.

On the ensuing possession, James swatted away a layup attempt from Southern Illinois’ Tkiyah Nelson, effectively sealing the game. Shelling was then fouled on the rebound and calmly sank both free throws to put the game out of reach.

Southern Illinois guard Tkiyah Nelson, from St. Louis, Missouri, facilitated the offense with a game-high 10 assists, but the Salukis were hampered by 17 turnovers, which Western Kentucky converted into 13 points. The Lady Toppers were only slightly more careful with the ball, committing turnovers that led to 17 points for Southern Illinois.

Inside, the battle was a draw, with both teams scoring 24 points in the paint. Western Kentucky’s Mya Pratcher, a 6-foot forward from Memphis, Tennessee, provided a solid interior presence with 11 points. For Southern Illinois, forward Indya Green, a 5-foot-11 sophomore from Springfield, Missouri, contributed 10 points and three blocks.

The announced attendance was 321. The game was part of a challenging early-season schedule for both programs. Western Kentucky will look to build on the win when it hosts Florida Atlantic on Wednesday. Southern Illinois aims to snap its losing streak on the same afternoon with a road game at UAB.

The contest unfolded as projected by Interstat’s ELO system, which had given Western Kentucky a 90.30 percent probability to win. The Lady Toppers’ execution in the closing moments ultimately turned that projection into reality.
