Hawkeyes Remain Unbeaten, Overpower Fairfield at Carver-Hawkeye Arena

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — In a showcase of offensive firepower and defensive dominance, the Iowa Hawkeyes remained undefeated Sunday, fending off a late surge from the visiting Fairfield Stags for an 86-72 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game at a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

A crowd of 14,998 watched as the Hawkeyes methodically built a lead through the first three quarters before weathering a frantic fourth-quarter rally from the Stags to secure their eighth consecutive win to open the season. Fairfield’s record moved to 4-2.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Iowa’s offense operated with surgical precision, scoring 86 points on just 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 118.9. Fairfield, despite a valiant effort, managed 72 points from 75 possessions, an offensive rating of 95.5.

Iowa’s victory was anchored by a commanding performance from sophomore center Ava Heiden of Sherwood, Oregon. The 6-foot-4 post player recorded a monstrous double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds, adding four assists and four blocks to control the paint on both ends of the floor.

The Hawkeyes set the tone early, with Taylor McCabe of Fremont, Nebraska, and Kylie Feuerbach of Sycamore, Illinois, connecting from deep to help build a 24-13 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Fairfield, however, responded with a strong opening period of their own, led by sharp three-point shooting to keep the game within striking distance.

Iowa began to pull away decisively in the second quarter, outscoring the Stags 24-13 to take a 41-22 lead into halftime. The Hawkeyes’ defense tightened, forcing difficult shots and capitalizing on turnovers. Hannah Stuelke of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, provided a significant spark off the bench, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes of action.

The third quarter saw Iowa maintain its comfortable margin, but the final period belonged to Fairfield’s resilience. The Stags erupted for 27 points in the fourth quarter, nearly doubling their output from any other period, fueled by a relentless three-point assault. Christina Pham of Boston came off the bench to lead the charge, scoring 14 points, all in the second half, including four three-pointers.

However, every time Fairfield threatened to cut the deficit to single digits, Iowa had an answer. Feuerbach was a primary catalyst, scoring 17 points, many on critical possessions to stem the Stags’ momentum. Point guard Taylor Stremlow of Verona, Wisconsin, orchestrated the offense with nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while also contributing two blocks defensively.

Fairfield’s offense lived and died by the three-point line. The Stags shot an impressive 18 for 39 from beyond the arc, a 46 percent clip, but struggled inside, scoring only 14 points in the paint compared to Iowa’s 30. The Hawkeyes also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Fairfield 44-28 and securing 12 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points.

Janelle Brown led Fairfield with a well-rounded line of nine points and four assists, while Kaety L’Amoreaux of Endwell, New York, added 12 points and four assists.

The Hawkeyes’ balanced attack and superior efficiency proved too much to overcome. Iowa shot 50.9 percent from the field and went 18 for 26 from the free-throw line, while Fairfield attempted only five free throws, making two.

Iowa now looks ahead to its first Big Ten Conference test on the road at Rutgers next Saturday. Fairfield will aim to rebound on the road at Howard next Friday.
