Portland State at Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah (Interstat) — A dominant first-quarter performance by Utah Tech proved too much for Portland State to overcome as the Trailblazers secured a 71-63 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Burns Arena.
Utah Tech erupted for 28 points in the opening period, capitalizing on a flurry of Portland State turnovers and missed shots to build a commanding 28-10 lead. The Trailblazers’ early run was fueled by efficient offense and a disruptive defense that set the tone for the contest.
Portland State, showing resilience, battled back in the second quarter. The Vikings outscored Utah Tech 22-14, chipping away at the deficit to enter halftime trailing 42-32. The comeback attempt continued after the break, with Portland State winning the third quarter 18-14 to narrow the gap to 56-50 heading into the final period.
However, Utah Tech managed to hold off the charging Vikings in the fourth quarter, matching them basket for basket down the stretch to seal the eight-point win before an announced crowd of 572.
The game featured a standout scoring duel between two guards. Portland State’s Kyleigh Brown, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Silverton, Oregon, led all scorers with 26 points in 35 minutes of action. For Utah Tech, the offensive catalyst was Kaylee Borden, a 5-6 sophomore from Anadarko, Oklahoma, who poured in 25 points and dished out three assists in 35 minutes.
Brown received significant support from forward Hannah Chicken, a 6-foot freshman from Taree, Australia, who contributed 18 points and a block. For the Trailblazers, Brie Crittendon, a 5-10 freshman from Union, Kentucky, added 13 points, while Paige Cofer and Maddie Warren chipped in 10 and 9 points, respectively. Cofer also anchored the defense with two blocks.
Statistically, Utah Tech’s advantage came from beyond the arc and in forcing turnovers. The Trailblazers connected on 8 of 28 three-point attempts, while Portland State managed just 2 of 7 from deep. Utah Tech also converted 19 Portland State turnovers into scoring opportunities, committing 16 of their own.
From the field, Utah Tech shot 27 for 63, compared to Portland State’s 23 for 60. At the free-throw line, the Vikings made 15 of 22 attempts, and the Trailblazers hit 9 of 13.
With the loss, Portland State falls to 1-4 on the young season. Utah Tech improves to 3-1.
