Cal State Bakersfield at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. (Interstat) — Cal State Bakersfield built a massive early lead and then survived a dramatic second-half collapse to edge Wichita State 60-55 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Charles Koch Arena.

The Roadrunners (2-4) exploded out of the gate, opening the game on a 24-14 run in the first quarter and extending their lead to 42-29 by halftime. The offense, however, went ice-cold after the break, managing only five points in the entire third quarter as the Shockers (1-5) methodically chipped away at the deficit.

Wichita State outscored Bakersfield 15-5 in the third period, cutting the lead to 47-44 heading into the final frame. The Shockers continued their push, eventually tying the game and taking brief leads in a tense fourth quarter that featured eight lead changes.

The game was ultimately decided in the final 30 seconds. With the score tied, Cal State Bakersfield’s Chrishawn Coleman drove for a go-ahead layup with 24 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Wichita State’s Abby Cater committed a critical turnover, which was stolen by Bakersfield’s Marley Langi. The Shockers were then forced to foul, and Morgan Hawkins sank two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the victory for the Roadrunners.

Coleman led all scorers with 16 points for Cal State Bakersfield, adding three rebounds and three assists. Hawkins contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while Langi added 10 points.

For Wichita State, Cater led the way with 11 points and five rebounds. Maimouna Sissoko was a force defensively, pulling down seven rebounds and blocking two shots.

Despite the win, Cal State Bakersfield struggled mightily from the free-throw line, converting just 6 of 15 attempts. Their saving grace was a defense that forced 20 Wichita State turnovers, converting them into 18 points. The Roadrunners also dominated inside, outscoring the Shockers 34-22 in the paint.

Wichita State’s offensive woes were highlighted by a dismal 2-for-13 shooting performance from beyond the three-point arc. The Shockers’ season record fell to 1-5, while Cal State Bakersfield evened its record on a two-game road trip to 1-1, having defeated Omaha 82-73 on Thursday.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 846. The result was an upset according to Interstat’s ELO system, which had projected Wichita State with a 93.10 percent probability to win.

Cal State Bakersfield travels to face Arizona next on Nov. 29. Wichita State begins a two-game road trip in California, facing UC Irvine on Nov. 28 and Idaho on Nov. 29.
