Wofford at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Charlotte 49ers used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Wofford Terriers and secure a 73-59 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Halton Arena.

A tightly contested first half gave way to a decisive third period where Charlotte outscored Wofford 24-5, turning a four-point halftime advantage into an insurmountable lead. The 49ers improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Terriers fell to 1-4.

Tanajah Hayes led a balanced Charlotte attack with 16 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Princess Anderson also scored 16 points, and Zoe Best added 13. The 49ers capitalized on Wofford’s mistakes, scoring 20 points off 14 Terrier turnovers, compared to just 10 points off turnovers for the visitors.

Wofford was led by Toni Warren’s game-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Gabby Mundy contributed 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Queen Ikhiuwu posted a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The game was a tale of two halves. Wofford stayed within striking distance in the first half, trailing just 29-28 at the break. The Terriers’ offense, however, went cold in the third quarter, managing only five points as Charlotte built a 53-33 lead heading into the final period.

Wofford mounted a frantic comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, erupting for 26 points, but the deficit from the third quarter proved too large to overcome.

Charlotte’s efficiency was a key factor, as the 49ers shot 14 for 16 from the free-throw line and committed only nine turnovers. Wofford struggled from deep, connecting on just 7 of 27 three-point attempts, and managed only 4 of 7 from the charity stripe.

The game was played before an announced attendance of 631.
