Wofford at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Appalachian State Mountaineers used a dominant offensive performance and a stifling defense to cruise past the Wofford Terriers 77-50 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at the Holmes Center.

Appalachian State improved to 3-1 on the young season, while Wofford dropped to 1-3.

The Mountaineers seized control early, building a 24-12 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looking back. Their offensive efficiency was the story of the game, as they shot 53.4 percent from the field, connecting on 31 of 58 attempts. They were equally potent from beyond the arc, hitting 10 of 23 three-pointers.

Wofford struggled to find any offensive rhythm, shooting just 29.3 percent overall and a frigid 4 of 24 from three-point range. The Terriers were plagued by turnovers and managed only two assists for the entire game, highlighting their difficulties in generating clean looks against the Appalachian State defense.

Emma Smith orchestrated the Mountaineers’ victory with a near triple-double. The 5-foot-7 guard from Vestavia Hills, Alabama, filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in 30 minutes of action. Her all-around play facilitated a balanced scoring attack that saw five Mountaineers reach double figures.

Jayden McBride led all scorers with 15 points, including three three-pointers. Emily Hege and Elena Pericic each added 11 points, while Feryal Defne Atli contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. The Mountaineers also capitalized on Wofford’s mistakes, scoring 17 points off 13 Terrier turnovers.

Wofford’s offense ran primarily through Queen Ikhiuwu. The 6-1 forward from Madrid, Spain, posted a team-high 16 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Maddie Heiss was the only other Terrier in double figures, finishing with nine points.

Despite the lopsided score, Wofford found success at the free-throw line, converting 12 of 13 attempts. Appalachian State, conversely, struggled from the charity stripe, making just 5 of 14.

The Mountaineers’ win was a bounce-back performance after a loss to Davidson earlier in the week. Wofford, which opened its season with a blowout win over Converse, has now lost three straight.

Appalachian State will travel to face West Virginia on Thursday. Wofford’s next contest is at Charlotte on Saturday.
