Georgia women roll past Jacksonville State for 5th straight win

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to remain undefeated, dispatching the visiting Jacksonville State Gamecocks 76-51 on Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 on the young season, while the Gamecocks fell to 1-3.

Georgia’s defense was the story of the game, stifling Jacksonville State from the opening tip. The Bulldogs held the Gamecocks to just 29.3 percent shooting from the floor, including a 5-for-21 performance from beyond the three-point line. Jacksonville State’s offensive struggles were further highlighted by an offensive rating of just 73.3 points per 100 possessions.

Offensively, Georgia was efficient, shooting 46.8 percent from the field and posting an offensive rating of 105.4. The Bulldogs also controlled the interior, outscoring the Gamecocks 38-20 in the paint and blocking six shots.

Georgia guard Trinity Turner, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Orlando, Florida, led all scorers with 16 points. She added three rebounds, three assists and a block in 31 minutes of action. She was instrumental in setting the tone early, scoring or assisting on several of Georgia’s initial baskets.

She was complemented by backcourt partner Dani Carnegie, a 5-9 guard from Mount Vernon, New York, who filled the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes.

Inside, Georgia’s post players provided a significant advantage. Mia Woolfolk, a 6-3 forward from Midlothian, Virginia, came off the bench to chip in 13 points. Zhen Craft, a 6-2 forward from Waldorf, Maryland, contributed six points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. The Bulldogs also got a strong rebounding performance from Vera Ojenuwa, a 6-4 post player from Delta State, Nigeria, who pulled down six rebounds in just 11 minutes.

For Jacksonville State, Maria Sanchez Ponce, a 5-10 guard from Conil de la Frontera, Spain, led the way with 14 points and five rebounds. Brooklyn McDaniel added 12 points for the Gamecocks, who struggled with ball movement, registering only six total assists against 12 turnovers.

The game was never in serious doubt after the first quarter. After a slow start from both teams, Georgia used a 13-2 run to close the opening period, capped by a Savannah Henderson three-pointer, to take a 16-9 lead. The Bulldogs steadily built on that advantage throughout the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 37-25 lead.

Any hope of a Jacksonville State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as Georgia’s defense tightened further, holding the Gamecocks to just 11 points in the period. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 56-39 by the start of the fourth quarter and cruised to the 25-point victory.

Georgia’s Rylie Theuerkauf, a 5-9 guard from Tenafly, New Jersey, also reached double figures, scoring 10 points.

The Bulldogs will look to continue their unbeaten streak when they host North Florida on Thursday. Jacksonville State will try to get back in the win column on the road at New Orleans on Saturday.
