Elon Routs Presbyterian in Dominant Home Victory
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Elon women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance on Monday afternoon, overwhelming Presbyterian from the opening tip and cruising to a 93-48 victory at Schar Center.
The Phoenix set the tone immediately, erupting for 29 points in the first quarter while holding the visiting Blue Hose to just 13. That 16-point lead after ten minutes effectively decided the contest, as Elon never looked back, methodically expanding its advantage in front of a home crowd of 3,224.
Elon’s offensive execution was a model of efficiency. The Phoenix shot a blistering 63.8 percent from the floor, connecting on 37 of 58 field goal attempts. They were equally potent from beyond the arc, making 6 of 12 three-pointers, and capitalized on their free throw opportunities, going 13 for 20. The offense generated 93 points from just 66 possessions, a remarkably high offensive rating of 139.8.
The Phoenix dominated the interior, outscoring Presbyterian 48-16 in the paint and converting 19 Blue Hose turnovers into 24 points. Elon also controlled the glass, securing 11 offensive rebounds.
In stark contrast, Presbyterian struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The Blue Hose shot 32 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers. They managed only 48 points from 69 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 69.9.
Elon’s victory was a balanced effort, with four players scoring in double figures. Tamia Watkins, a 6-foot-2 forward from Kershaw, South Carolina, led all scorers with 15 points and added five rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. Fellow forwards Quinzia Fulmore of Greensboro, North Carolina, and LaNae’ Corbett of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, were equally impactful. Fulmore, standing 6-foot-3, tallied 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Corbett also scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Guard Ashanti Fox from Vass, North Carolina, rounded out the double-digit scorers for Elon with 13 points and four rebounds. The Phoenix also shared the ball effectively, with Laila Anderson and Maraja Pass each dishing out five assists.
For Presbyterian, the lone bright spot was guard Allie Sykes. The Burlington, North Carolina, native led the Blue Hose with 13 points, all of which came from beyond the three-point line or the free throw line. Forward Amani Williams added nine points.
With the win, Elon improved its early season record to 2-1. The Phoenix opened the season with an overtime victory at East Tennessee State before falling on the road to North Carolina. Presbyterian’s record fell to 1-2. The Blue Hose opened with a lopsided win over Warren Wilson but were defeated by Wake Forest in their previous outing.
Elon’s next contest is at home against Howard on Saturday. Presbyterian returns to action on Friday, hosting UNC Greensboro.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Elon entered the game with a 95.60 percent probability to win, a projection the Phoenix lived up to with a comprehensive and dominant performance on their home floor.
