Belmont pulls away from Brown for home victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Belmont Bruins used a dominant fourth-quarter surge to pull away from the Brown Bears, securing an 83-61 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Curb Events Center.

In their home opener before a crowd of 1,020, the Bruins weathered a strong first-half shooting performance from Brown before overwhelming the Bears with defensive pressure and efficient offense down the stretch. The game was a tale of two halves, with Brown staying competitive through three quarters before Belmont’s depth and execution proved decisive in the final period.

Belmont improved its record to 1-1, bouncing back from a season-opening loss at Oklahoma. Brown begins its season 0-1.

The first quarter was an offensive shootout, with both teams finding early success. Brown’s Alyssa Moreland was aggressive from the start, scoring on multiple drives to the basket. However, Belmont answered every Brown run, finishing the period with a 23-19 lead thanks to a late three-pointer from Quinn Eubank.

The second quarter saw a significant defensive shift. Belmont tightened its defense, holding Brown to 18 points while its own offense cooled, scoring only 12. Despite the scoring drought, the Bruins maintained a narrow 35-37 lead at halftime. Brown’s Olivia Young connected from beyond the arc to keep the Bears within striking distance, but the team was hampered by 11 first-half turnovers, which Belmont converted into 12 points.

After halftime, Belmont began to create separation. The Bruins outscored Brown 21-15 in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 56-52. The period was characterized by Belmont’s ability to capitalize on Brown’s mistakes, with guards Tuti Jones and Jailyn Banks consistently creating havoc. A key sequence involved Jones drawing a foul and converting free throws, followed shortly by a Banks layup off a steal, extending the lead and forcing a Brown timeout.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Belmont. The Bruins erupted for 27 points, their highest-scoring quarter of the night, while their defense smothered the Bears, limiting them to just nine points. Belmont’s ball movement was exceptional, leading to open looks from three-point range and easy baskets in transition. The Bruins opened the period on a 15-4 run, effectively putting the game out of reach. Sanaa Tripp and Kensley Feltner hit crucial three-pointers during the stretch, and Hilary Fuller provided a consistent interior presence as Belmont cruised to the 22-point victory.

Statistical disparities told the story of the game. Belmont’s defense was the catalyst, forcing 19 Brown turnovers and registering 14 steals. The Bruins converted those takeaways into 24 points, a 13-point advantage over Brown in that category. Belmont also shared the ball effectively, dishing out 14 assists compared to just five for the Bears.

Belmont’s offensive balance was on full display. Hilary Fuller led all scorers with 17 points and added eight rebounds. Tuti Jones filled the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Quinn Eubank recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Jailyn Banks (13 points) and Sanaa Tripp (10 points) also finished in double figures. Avery Strickland contributed 11 points.

For Brown, Alyssa Moreland delivered a standout performance with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Young added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Aima Ofunrein nearly notched a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Brown will look to secure its first win of the season when it travels to face Holy Cross on Wednesday. Belmont faces a tough road test, visiting Tennessee next Thursday.
