Kent State at West Virginia

STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — The West Virginia women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Friday night, cruising to an 88-47 victory over Kent State at a spirited WVU Coliseum.

The Mountaineers, playing in front of 2,954 fans, never trailed, establishing their dominance early with a 22-point first quarter and maintaining a relentless offensive pace throughout the contest. The win improves West Virginia’s record to 2-0, while Kent State falls to 0-2.

West Virginia’s offense was firing on all cylinders, led by a standout performance from sophomore guard Sydney Shaw. The Miami, Florida, native poured in a game-high 23 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc, while also grabbing six rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Her backcourt partner, Jordan Harrison from Oklahoma City, orchestrated the offense with 13 points and a team-high five assists.

The Mountaineers’ frontcourt was equally formidable. Junior forward Kierra Wheeler of Minneapolis was a force inside, scoring 17 points on efficient shooting and adding four rebounds. Freshman Riley Makalusky, from Fishers, Indiana, provided a significant spark off the bench with 12 points. The scoring was balanced, with senior guard Gia Cooke also reaching double figures, chipping in 12 points.

Defensively, West Virginia smothered the Golden Flashes, forcing numerous turnovers and limiting Kent State’s scoring opportunities in every quarter. The Mountaineers built a 42-22 lead by halftime and extended their advantage after the break, outscoring Kent State 22-10 in the third quarter to put the game completely out of reach.

Kent State struggled to find consistent offense against West Virginia’s pressure. Mya Babbitt, a guard from Papillion, Nebraska, was the lone bright spot for the Golden Flashes, leading her team with 13 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes. Forward Riley Rismiller from Coldwater, Ohio, battled inside for eight points and six rebounds, while point guard Dionna Gray, a hometown product from Huntington, West Virginia, dished out five assists.

The game was the second of a season-opening road swing for Kent State, which lost 80-48 at James Madison on Monday. West Virginia, meanwhile, followed up its season-opening 83-47 win over Fort Wayne with another dominant home showing.

Looking ahead, West Virginia prepares for a tough non-conference test, hosting Temple on Tuesday before a marquee neutral-site matchup against Duke on Friday. Kent State returns home to face Walsh on Monday, seeking its first win of the season.
