North Texas Routs Grambling Behind Dominant First Quarter

DENTON, Texas (Interstat) — The North Texas Mean Green women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Friday night, overwhelming the visiting Grambling Lady Tigers from the opening tip and cruising to an 89-49 victory at the North Texas Coliseum.

In a game where the outcome aligned with statistical expectations (Interstat) — Interstat’s ELO system gave North Texas a 97.1 percent probability to win (Interstat) — the Mean Green showcased a balanced and dominant attack to improve their early season record to two wins and no losses. Grambling, facing its second tough opponent in a row, fell to zero wins and two losses.

The tone was set decisively in the first quarter, as North Texas erupted for 25 points while holding Grambling to a mere three. The staggering 22-point deficit after just ten minutes of play proved insurmountable for the Lady Tigers, who struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the Mean Green’s stifling defense.

While Grambling showed flickers of life in the second quarter, outscoring North Texas 15 to 14, the home team quickly reasserted its authority after halftime. The Mean Green poured in another 25 points in the third quarter, matching their first-quarter output, and replicated that total once more in the fourth to seal the lopsided win.

Aysia Proctor, a guard from Schertz, Texas, led all scorers with 18 points for North Texas. She added three rebounds and three assists in just 19 minutes of action, providing an efficient and explosive spark for the offense.

However, the foundation of the victory was built on the glass, where North Texas controlled the rebounding battle. Megan Nestor, a 6-foot-3 center from Canaries, Saint Lucia, was the primary force, hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds to go with six points. Her presence in the paint limited second-chance opportunities for Grambling and fueled the Mean Green’s transition game.

The North Texas offense was a model of distribution, with multiple players making significant contributions. Andi Schissler of Kersey, Colorado, filled the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Tionna Lidge, a 6-foot-3 forward from El Paso, provided a strong interior presence with 14 points and four rebounds. The backcourt depth was also on display, as Tiffany Hammond scored nine points and Mekhia Chase added eight points and four rebounds.

For Grambling, the lone bright spot was the performance of Monica Marsh. The Plano, Texas, native, playing in her home region, scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jamirica Roberson of Montgomery, Alabama, battled hard on the interior, pulling down 10 rebounds and scoring eight points in a team-high 32 minutes.

The loss continues a challenging start to the season for the Lady Tigers, who opened their campaign with a 96-70 defeat at SMU on Tuesday. They will look to secure their first win of the season when they return home to host Ouachita Baptist on Sunday.

The win extends a dominant start for North Texas, which opened its season with a historic 106-36 rout of Oklahoma Christian on Monday. The Mean Green have now outscored their first two opponents by a combined 110 points. They will enjoy a brief break before returning to the court next Thursday to host Nelson.

Looking ahead, Grambling’s schedule remains arduous, with upcoming road games against Louisiana-Monroe, Arizona, and Baylor. North Texas will face a test of its own on November 22 with a road contest against SMU, the same team that handily defeated Grambling earlier in the week.

The announced attendance at the North Texas Coliseum was 1,497 spectators who witnessed a thorough demonstration of the Mean Green’s early-season form. The team’s combination of defensive intensity, rebounding prowess, and a deep, multi-faceted scoring attack proved far too much for a Grambling squad still searching for its footing.
