Bowling Green at South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive dominance, the top-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks overwhelmed the Bowling Green Falcons 114-47 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday night at a sold-out Colonial Life Arena.
A crowd of 16,649 watched as the Gamecocks improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Falcons fell to an even 1-1.
South Carolina left no doubt from the opening tip, sprinting to a 27-7 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 55-19 advantage by halftime. The onslaught continued after the break, with the Gamecocks outscoring Bowling Green 31-16 in the third quarter and 28-12 in the fourth to secure the lopsided victory.
The Gamecocks’ offense was a model of efficiency, relentlessly attacking the basket. South Carolina scored a staggering 66 points in the paint, more than triple Bowling Green’s total of 18. The home team also capitalized on Falcon mistakes, scoring 21 points off turnovers.
Freshman Joyce Edwards led a balanced and potent South Carolina attack, scoring a game-high 24 points on efficient shooting. She also contributed four rebounds, three assists and three blocks in just 25 minutes of action. Her performance set the tone for an evening where the Gamecocks’ depth was on full display.
Center Madina Okot recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while also swatting away four Bowling Green shot attempts. Point guard Raven Johnson orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out 11 assists to go with 11 points and five rebounds.
The Gamecocks’ backcourt was equally formidable. Ta’Niya Latson filled the stat sheet with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Tessa Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Ayla McDowell and Agot Makeer added 11 and 12 points, respectively, to round out a group of seven South Carolina players who scored in double figures.
Bowling Green, meanwhile, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against South Carolina’s swarming defense. Johnea Donahue led the Falcons with nine points and four rebounds. Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick was the only other Falcon to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.
The Gamecocks never trailed, establishing control immediately with a 12-0 run early in the first quarter. The Falcons briefly stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer from Paige Kohler, but South Carolina responded with another sustained run to put the game out of reach before the end of the first period.
South Carolina will look to continue its strong start when it hosts in-state rival Clemson on Tuesday. Bowling Green, which opened its season with a road win at Louisiana-Lafayette, will hit the road again to face Wisconsin on Tuesday.
