Tarleton State Women Rally Past Texas-Arlington for Season Sweep
ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — Jakoriah Long scored 19 points and Gia Adams added 16 as the Tarleton State Texans snapped a four-game losing streak with a 65-54 victory over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game on Thursday night at College Park Center.
The most important part of the game came in the third quarter, where the Texans broke open a tight contest. Leading by just five points at halftime, Tarleton State erupted for 22 points in the period while holding the Mavericks to 11, transforming a 22-17 edge into a commanding 44-28 advantage entering the final quarter. The Texans’ defense was stifling, forcing multiple shot clock violations and turnovers that fueled their transition game. Long was instrumental in the surge, scoring nine of her points during the quarter, including a personal 7-0 run that featured a steal and a layup, a three-pointer and another driving layup to push the lead to 16 points and force a Texas-Arlington timeout.
The Mavericks, who had been projected as strong favorites by advanced metrics, never recovered from the third-quarter onslaught. They managed to cut the deficit to 11 points on several occasions in the fourth quarter but could not mount a sustained run against a disciplined Tarleton State squad that answered every challenge.
Long, a 5-foot-7 guard from Waco, Texas, filled the stat sheet beyond her scoring, adding two assists and two steals in 32 minutes. Adams, a 5-6 guard from Houston, provided crucial playmaking with five assists to go with her 16 points in 34 minutes. Kyriana Jones of Little Rock, Arkansas, contributed 10 points for the Texans.
Texas-Arlington was led by Jadyn Atchison, who scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds and recorded four blocks in 28 minutes. Kendal Robinson came off the bench to score nine points in just 12 minutes for the Mavericks. Mila Reynolds also added nine points.
The game was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams shooting poorly. Tarleton State built a 15-12 lead after the first quarter but saw its offense stall in the second, scoring only seven points. Texas-Arlington could not capitalize, managing just 13 points in the period to trail 22-17 at the break.
The victory improved Tarleton State’s season record to 13-16, while Texas-Arlington fell to 10-19. The win also gave the Texans a season sweep of the Mavericks, having previously won 51-37 on Jan. 21 in Stephenville.
A crowd of 611 watched as the Texans controlled the glass and took better care of the basketball, key factors in overcoming their shooting woes. The Mavericks, who entered the contest having won two of their last three, were held to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.
Texas-Arlington will look to rebound quickly, as they are scheduled to host Abilene Christian on Saturday. Tarleton State’s regular season is now complete.
