Saunders Leads Southern Indiana to Road Win Over Arkansas-Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a suffocating start and a frantic finish, the Southern Indiana women’s basketball team held off a furious second-half rally by Arkansas-Little Rock to secure a 68-63 victory on Saturday at Jack Stephens Center.
The Screaming Eagles, who led by as many as 17 points in the first half, saw their advantage whittled down to a single possession in the final minute before closing the game on a decisive run from the free-throw line. The win improved Southern Indiana to 20-9 on the season, while the Trojans fell to an even 15-15.
Southern Indiana’s victory was anchored by a dominant first quarter that set the tone. The Screaming Eagles held Arkansas-Little Rock to just six points on 2-of-12 shooting in the opening period, racing out to a 14-6 lead. The defensive pressure continued into the second quarter, with Southern Indiana building a 30-17 lead late in the half. The Trojans, struggling to find any offensive rhythm, shot a dismal 6 for 27 from three-point range for the game and committed 15 turnovers.
Ali Saunders of Southern Indiana was the offensive catalyst, pouring in a game-high 25 points in 40 minutes of action. The 5-foot-10 guard from Depauw, Indiana, also grabbed key defensive rebounds down the stretch and was central to her team’s ability to withstand the Trojan comeback. She was supported by Shannon Blacher, who added 12 points, and the interior presence of Chloe Gannon, who contributed 13 points and played the full 40 minutes.
Despite the early deficit, Arkansas-Little Rock refused to capitulate. The Trojans chipped away in the third quarter, outscoring Southern Indiana 20-25 in the period to narrow the gap. The charge was led by Jordan Holman, who scored 23 points, and Brenna Burk, who added 15, including three three-pointers. A driving layup by Holman with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter cut the Southern Indiana lead to 61-58, sending a surge through the home crowd.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final 90 seconds. With Southern Indiana clinging to a 63-61 lead after a pair of Holman free throws, the Screaming Eagles’ defense forced a crucial stop. On the ensuing possession, Saunders drove aggressively and was fouled by Brenna Burk with 16 seconds left. Saunders calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to four.
On the next trip, Arkansas-Little Rock’s Destinee Salgado was fouled on an offensive rebound attempt but missed both free throws with 17 seconds remaining, effectively sealing the Trojans’ fate. Saunders was fouled again and hit one more free throw to provide the final margin, as a last-gasp three-point attempt by Burk was off the mark.
Southern Indiana’s efficiency, though not spectacular, proved sufficient. The Screaming Eagles posted an offensive rating of 94.4 points per 100 possessions, outperforming the Trojans’ 86.8. While both teams recorded eight assists and eight steals, Southern Indiana’s ability to capitalize on Arkansas-Little Rock’s mistakes, scoring 15 points off turnovers compared to the Trojans’ eight, was a subtle but significant factor.
The game also featured a notable performance from Arkansas-Little Rock’s Alaina Payne, who dished out seven assists and orchestrated much of the second-half offensive surge. Southern Indiana’s Sophia Loden provided valuable minutes off the bench with nine points and three assists.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Southern Indiana, which had defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 57-40 in Evansville back in December. Entering the contest, statistical models gave the Screaming Eagles a slight edge to win, a projection they fulfilled by executing in the game’s pivotal final moments.
