Robert Morris Rallies Past Wright State in Horizon League Matchup
CORAPOLIS, Pa. (Interstat) — A dominant second-half defensive performance propelled the Robert Morris Colonials to a 62-50 victory over the Wright State Raiders in a Horizon League women’s basketball game Saturday at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
The game turned decisively after halftime, with the Colonials holding the Raiders to just six points in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and seize control for good. Wright State, which led 27-23 at the break after a strong first quarter, managed only 23 points over the final 20 minutes.
Robert Morris was led by a commanding performance from junior forward Myriam Traore. The 6-foot-3 native of Lognes, France, scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and added three steals and a block in 36 minutes. Her interior presence was pivotal as the Colonials tightened their defense.
The Raiders started the game with impressive offensive efficiency, connecting on 5 of their first 7 three-point attempts to build a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Ellie Magestro-Kennedy of Wright State was instrumental in the early surge, finishing with 15 points, all from beyond the arc, on 5-for-10 shooting from three-point range.
However, the offensive rhythm vanished for the visitors after the opening period. Wright State shot just 16 for 51 from the floor overall and committed 18 turnovers, which Robert Morris converted into 19 points. The Colonials’ defensive pressure, which generated 11 steals and five blocks, was a constant disruptor.
Robert Morris guard Eva Levingston of Oakland, California, anchored that defensive effort with three blocks and three steals to go with six points and four assists. Fellow guard Jada Lee, a Pittsburgh native, contributed six points, four assists, and a game-high five steals.
The Colonials began their comeback in the second quarter, outscoring Wright State 14-6 to trim the lead to four at halftime. The third quarter proved the decisive stanza. Robert Morris opened with a 10-0 run, fueled by baskets from Aislin Malcolm and Traore, to take a lead they would not relinquish. They held Wright State without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the period, outscoring the Raiders 18-6 to carry a 41-33 advantage into the fourth.
Malcolm, a sophomore from nearby Carnegie, Pennsylvania, provided crucial secondary scoring with 14 points. The Colonials shared the ball effectively, tallying 11 assists on 25 made field goals.
Wright State made a final push in the fourth quarter, closing to within five points on multiple occasions, the last at 49-44 following a Magestro-Kennedy three-pointer with 7:12 remaining. Each time, Robert Morris had an answer, primarily through Traore, who scored seven points in the final quarter to keep the Raiders at bay.
The Raiders’ offensive struggles were encapsulated by their offensive rating of 69.8 points per 100 possessions, compared to 89.5 for Robert Morris. Despite shooting a remarkable 58.8% from three-point range, Wright State’s inability to generate consistent offense inside the arc or protect the ball proved fatal.
Olivia Brown led Wright State with five assists, but the team managed only six total for the game. Grace Okih added five points off the bench for the Raiders.
With the win, Robert Morris improved to 18-11 overall and strengthened its position in the Horizon League standings. Wright State fell to 10-21, dropping its second straight game.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for the Colonials, who defeated the Raiders 74-53 in Dayton on Jan. 24. The most important part of the game was the Colonials’ overwhelming third-quarter defensive performance, which completely stifled a previously hot-shooting Wright State team and transformed a four-point halftime deficit into an eight-point lead, setting the stage for the comfortable final margin.
