Mount Saint Mary’s Outlasts Sacred Heart in Overtime Thriller
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense and critical plays in the final seconds, Mount Saint Mary’s outlasted Sacred Heart 68-63 in overtime in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday at the William Pitt Center.
The Mountaineers, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, completed a second-half comeback to force the extra period before dominating the overtime session to secure the road victory. The win pushed Mount Saint Mary’s to an even 12-12 overall record, while Sacred Heart fell to 11-13.
The most pivotal sequence of the contest unfolded in the final 30 seconds of regulation. Trailing 58-56, Mount Saint Mary’s guard Alana Powell drove for a layup to tie the game with just six seconds remaining. Sacred Heart inbounded the ball to its leading scorer, Amelia Wood, who was immediately fouled. Wood made the first free throw to put the Pioneers ahead 59-58 but missed the second. Mount Saint Mary’s secured the rebound, called a timeout, and advanced the ball.
Out of the timeout, the Mountaineers again went to Powell. The junior from Haymarket, Virginia, drove the lane and converted another layup, this time giving her team a 60-59 lead with only one second on the clock. Sacred Heart’s ensuing desperation inbounds pass was stolen by Mount Saint Mary’s Kayla Lindsey, sealing the dramatic end to regulation and forcing overtime.
The Mountaineers carried that momentum into the extra period, opening with a 7-0 run and holding Sacred Heart without a field goal until a Missy Nuku three-pointer with 18 seconds left, which only served to cut the deficit to 66-63. Powell then iced the game with two free throws.
Mount Saint Mary’s victory was anchored by a dominant interior performance and relentless defensive pressure. The Mountaineers outscored Sacred Heart 40-20 in the paint and converted 23 Pioneers turnovers into 18 points. Despite a frigid 1-for-12 shooting performance from three-point range, Mount Saint Mary’s compensated by making 13 of 15 free throws and shooting 42 percent from the floor overall.
Sacred Heart relied heavily on the three-point shot, making 10 of 28 attempts, but struggled inside the arc, shooting just 10-for-29 on two-point field goals. The Pioneers also were hampered at the free-throw line, making only 13 of 20 attempts.
Amber Bullard led all scorers for Mount Saint Mary’s, recording a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Powell was the engine of the offense, playing 41 minutes and scoring a team-high 28 points, including the two crucial baskets at the end of regulation. Her backcourt pressure also contributed to the team’s 14 steals.
Sacred Heart was led by Amelia Wood, who filled the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in 42 minutes. Faith Pappas provided a significant spark off the bench, hitting four three-pointers for 12 points. Emma Kirby and Nalyce Dudley also scored 12 and seven points, respectively, with Dudley grabbing 10 rebounds.
The game began slowly for the visitors, as Sacred Heart built a 34-26 halftime lead behind 58 percent three-point shooting. The Mountaineers chipped away in the third quarter and used a 20-point fourth quarter to set the stage for the late-game heroics.
The teams will meet again in the regular-season finale on Feb. 26 at Mount Saint Mary’s. The Mountaineers next host Fairfield on Thursday. Sacred Heart travels to face Saint Peter’s next Saturday.
