Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — The Nicholls State Colonels will look to halt a three-game slide when they host the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in a Southland Conference women’s basketball matchup Saturday at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (10-11, 3-5 Southland) enter the contest after a narrow 69-66 home loss to Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Thursday. Anyra Wilson led Nicholls with 14 points in that defeat. The junior guard has been a consistent presence, including a near triple-double of 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a win at New Orleans on Jan. 10. Nicholls State will rely on her versatility as it seeks to regain momentum and improve its standing in the conference.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-17, 2-6) arrives in Thibodaux seeking to snap a two-game losing streak following a 64-58 defeat at New Orleans. In that game, Marissa Shelton scored a team-high 15 points and K’Nari Holliday added 14. The Islanders’ offense often runs through guard Trinity Slocum, who is coming off a 10-point, three-assist performance. Slocum has shown strong playmaking ability, dishing out 10 assists in a win over Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 17.

The recent series history favors the Colonels, who earned a 63-57 victory over the Islanders in Corpus Christi on Dec. 29. That result will be fresh in the minds of both squads as they meet for the second time this season.

For Nicholls State, finding consistent scoring beyond Wilson will be key. Sh’Diamond McKnight provided a spark with 17 points in the last outing. The Colonels’ defense, which allowed 69 points in their last game, will aim to tighten up against an Islanders team averaging just 57.6 points per game in conference play.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will need to improve its offensive efficiency after being held under 60 points in four of its last five games. Generating points in the paint and capitalizing on turnovers will be crucial for the Islanders to pull off the road upset.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon. Following this game, Nicholls State begins a three-game road trip at Houston Christian on Thursday, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to host Stephen F. Austin.
