Nicholls State Women Dominate Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference Matchup
THIBODAUX, La. (Interstat) — The Nicholls State Colonels used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to cruise past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 69-42 in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Stopher Gym.
The Colonels, who improved to 11-11 overall and evened their conference record, seized control from the opening tip and never trailed. They built a 19-5 lead after the first quarter, capitalizing on a frigid start by the Islanders, who managed just two field goals in the opening period.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second quarter, when Nicholls State extinguished any hope of an Islander rally. After Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Rayna Williams converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 23-11, the Colonels unleashed a 12-0 run over the next four minutes. The surge was fueled by their relentless defensive pressure, which forced a series of turnovers and led to easy transition opportunities. Marie Kenembeni and Tanita Swift combined for eight points during the run, which pushed the lead to 35-11 and effectively put the game out of reach before halftime.
Nicholls State’s defense was the story, forcing 25 Islander turnovers and converting them into 20 points. The Colonels also recorded 15 steals, led by Swift and Kenembeni, who consistently disrupted passing lanes. Offensively, Nicholls State shared the ball effectively, finishing with 15 assists on 22 made field goals.
Kenembeni, a 6-foot-2 junior from Yaounde, Cameroon, led all scorers with 19 points, adding five rebounds and four steals. She was efficient from the field and the free-throw line, continuing a strong stretch of recent play. Guard Sh’Diamond McKnight, from Bossier City, Louisiana, provided a major spark off the bench with a game-high 22 points in just 22 minutes, including three 3-pointers. Swift finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Laryn Scott anchored the interior with nine points, six rebounds and a block.
For Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which fell to 4-18, offensive struggles persisted throughout the contest. The Islanders shot just 34.2% from the field and committed those 25 turnovers against the Colonel pressure. Torie Sevier led the Islanders with 11 points and four blocks. Marissa Shelton added 10 points, and Chelsea Wooten grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Colonels dominated the glass, outrebounding the Islanders 42-30 and pulling down 12 offensive boards, which led to 11 second-chance points. Nicholls State also excelled at getting to the free-throw line, making 20 of 27 attempts, while the Islanders connected on just 14 of 23.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Nicholls State, which also defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 63-57 on Dec. 29. The Colonels snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which has lost three straight and eight of its last nine, continues to search for consistency on both ends of the floor. The Islanders have been held under 50 points in six of their 18 losses this season.
An announced crowd of 311 at Stopher Gym watched the Colonels methodically pull away, maintaining a lead of at least 20 points for the entire second half. Nicholls State’s largest advantage was 29 points in the fourth quarter.
The game unfolded largely as predicted by advanced metrics, with Nicholls State entering as a heavy favorite. The Colonels’ performance validated that projection, showcasing their defensive identity and superior depth.
Nicholls State will look to build on the momentum when it travels to face Houston Christian on Thursday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to host Stephen F. Austin, also on Thursday.
